IF Mudgeeraba-Nerang are to go on and play Kookaburra Cup finals they will have rookie Dayne Siede to thank for helping them get there.
A maiden first-grade ton from the 20-year-old right-hander has set up a likely outright win for the Bushmen in their clash with bottom side Loganholme at Bartercard Oval.
Mudgeeraba (6-265 declared) finished the day right on top of Loganholme, who limped to 9-69 by stumps.
Despite a fine 92 from Zac Gayfer, Siede’s innings was the talk of the town after he smashed 78 runs in boundaries (12 fours, five sixes) in his knock of 109 not out.
One of his sixes scattered club faithful sitting on the clubhouse balcony, another landed on the full on top of the shade cloth over the children’s playground.
“I got a licence from the captain (Mitch Daly) to get us a decent score and give us a crack at getting outright points,” Siede said.
“It was awesome.”
Siede has had a rollercoaster season with Mudgeeraba, starting in fourth grade, getting promoted to thirds, then seconds, then to first grade. Siede was then back in second grade but responded with 150 against Helensvale-Pacific Pines and has played the last three games in firsts.
“It has been rocks or diamonds really, it’s just the way it has happened,” club junior product Siede said of his up and down run.
The name Siede is well known in the local Aussie rules fraternity. His father Paul played in two QAFL premierships with Southport and another with Palm Beach-Currumbin in the GCAFL.
Among Paul’s highlights was being named Joe Grant Medal for best on ground in the 1992 grand final.
The Queens club’s Winton wrecking machine was in full operation against Runaway Bay at Sam Loxton Oval on Saturday. Brothers Jack (5-33), Sam (2-9) and Harry (2-29) Winton took nine of the 10 wickets to fall as the Bay were dismissed for 117.
Mitch Foster was the one who denied a family clean-sweep with the 10th wicket.
It was the same player who denied a Winton clean sweep in a recent match against Alberton. He threw down the wickets to execute a run-out that day.
At stumps, ladder leaders were well placed at 1-40.
Southport-Labrador have given finals hopefuls Palm Beach-Currumbin something to think about at Salk Oval. Batting first, Southport made 247 of which David Marshall scored 84, Brad Sauer 48 and veteran Wade Kilborn 40.
In-form veteran Chris Swan hit 74 as an opener as Surfers Paradise (201) headed Helensvale-Pacific Pines (2-49) at Hession Oval; Burleigh made 206 but home side Coomera-Hope Island were 3-133 (Andrew Robinson 87) at Pro Insure Oval; and Alberton put on 9-239 from their 75 overs against Broadbeach-Robina at Alberton.
Cats paceman Reece McDonald sent down 33 overs for figures of 4-75.
