HE has the Ocean6 men’s swim series within his grasp but Currumbin Vikings teen Ky Kinsela is keeping expectations in check as he continues his Ironman education.
Still just 18, Kinsela has been earmarked as an Ironman star of the future following a breakout season in which he has made three of five finals, including a career-best finish of ninth in Round 4 and 16th at Surfers Paradise on Saturday.
His potential has been underlined in the swim series, where he holds a near-unassailable 43-point lead over Zac Morris despite finishing second to Ollie Signorini in the weekend’s penultimate round.

But while the Coffs Harbour product says it’s “crazy” to be leading the way in his pet event, he knows he has considerable ground to make up to compete for an Ironman title.
“I find that I go pretty good if I’m just doing ski or just doing board. Swim has definitely always been my stronger leg,” Kinsela, now in his third season at Currumbin, said.
“For me, it’s just putting the three together (in the Ironman) and keeping that pace the whole way through the race. That’s the tough part.
“Just making a final is great for me. I reckon I could’ve got a better result (on Saturday) but you definitely have bad races here and there.
“Those guys that are absolutely smashing me out there have been doing it for a long time and they definitely know what they’re doing more than I do. Racing is the best form of training because you’re watching the best go round and seeing them.
DEPTH KEY TO NORTHCLIFFE DOMINATION
“You can’t learn more than being out there with them. Regardless of where I come in the final, I just want to get that consistency going.
“I missed out making the final in the second and third round so I guess the goal (next season) would be to try and make the final every round.”
