Coomera happy to play ugly as combinations build within Brisbane Women’s Premier League squad

COOMERA are happy to play ugly as they continue their fight for Brisbane Women’s Premier League respect, with their three-game unbeaten run to go on the line against Ipswich City today.

COOMERA are happy to play ugly as they continue their fight for Brisbane Women’s Premier League respect.

After 4-0 and 4-1 losses to begin life in the BWPL, the Colts have now picked up five points from their last three games, including an impressive last-start 2-2 draw against heavily-fancied Peninsula Power.

Key to their ascension has been a focus on defence, with coach Archy Kahondo content to put aesthetics aside while combinations develop within the playing group.

‘WE’RE A LITTLE BIT TIRED OF BEING OVERLOOKED’ - PODCAST

“We’re getting there,” he said.

“We have found the formula that works and we’re just finessing that. It might mean being unattractive until we can get to the point where we can open up a bit more and be a bit more attacking.

“Until then, it’s just locking down at the back and getting results. The main thing is just getting used to playing together but we also have a strategy we’re working on.

“That’s the reason why we all play football - to play attractive football. But it all takes time.

“It’s a whole new team, there’s only a handful of players from last year. I have got to find a system that works for us.”

CONNOR NOT GIVING UP NPL HOPE

Now preparing to face an Ipswich City side that finished runner up to Annerley for last season’s premiership and championship, Kahondo said Coomera was far from the finished product.

“I still think there’s one or two positions that we will try to strengthen but I’m happy with how we have progressed and the way we have improved. The girls are playing well,” he said.

“(Ipswich) have had a mixed bag. They seem to have struggled the last couple of games but you don’t come second (last season) for nothing so we’re expecting a hard game.”

PALM BEACH POSITIVE ABOUT PROSPECTS

Kick off is at Brassall’s Sutton Park at 5.15pm today, while Southport host Virginia United at 5pm.

Robina City host University of Queensland at 4pm on Sunday, with Broadbeach United’s battle with The Lakes rescheduled for May 25.
