THEIR underdog tale will live long in the club history books but Coomera’s class of 2019 believe they can pen another chapter as they fight for a 10-year Gold Coast Premier League first.
Shock qualifiers for the FFA Cup’s Round of 32 earlier this season, the Colts are one win away from their first Premier League grand final since falling to Broadbeach United in the 2009 decider.
Having snuck into this year’s top four, they went some way to avenging that defeat with a dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over the Dolphins last Sunday.
X-FACTOR EMERGES AS SURFERS SET SIGHTS ON TITLE
Their assignment tomorrow night is to overcome champions Burleigh Heads, who lost just twice during the regular season before falling 2-1 to Surfers Paradise in last weekend’s grand final qualifier.
But just as they have done all season, coach Steve Macdonald’s men will head to Pizzey Park at 7pm believing they can defy their underdog tag.
“Just believe, go and believe in yourselves,” Macdonald said of the pre-game message to his players.
“We can do anything we want to do. After what we’ve already done (this season), we should be fully confident.
WARRIORS SEAL SHOT AT COAST LEAGUE SUPREMACY
“(Burleigh are) the best team in the league, the ladder doesn’t lie but we have full belief in ourself. I said before finals that we can match it with any team on our day, we’re just not as consistent as the other teams.
“But in one-off games we can match it with anyone. Obviously it’s going to be such a difficult game but we’ll go there full of belief and hopefully we get the result.”
The Colts are yet to taste grand final glory in Coast football’s top flight, but showed they will not lie down after overturning a 1-0 halftime deficit to overcome Broadbeach.
Macdonald said the result had only heightened his faith in their ultimate success.
“I keep saying how proud I am of these boys but they just keep defying odds. (Broadbeach) are such a good team,” he said.
KNIGHTS’ NEXT MISSION TO SHUT OFF POWER
“To do what we’ve done (against them), we’re just so proud and hopefully it’s only a stepping stone. We wanted to come into these finals and not only be the team that came fourth and everyone thought might go out.
“We wanted to make a statement and say we deserve to be here.”
