Coomera Colts knocked out of FFA Cup but not before a brave fight

It was the ultimate fairytale story but now it’s finally finished.

COOMERA’S mighty FFA Cup run is over but not before another epic fight against a more powerful rival last night.

WHAT COOMERA PLAYERS DO FOR WORK

The Gold Coast Premier League side’s stunning hopes of reaching the last 16 of the national knockout competition ended with a 2-1 loss at Mackay’s Sologinkin Oval.

Yet with the Colts showing the fight that underpinned their giant-killing spree in the 732-team competition – a point proved by Payden Pemberton’s late goal – NPL rivals Magpies Crusaders were made to work for their win.

It took until Michael Lyall’s 39th minute strike to finally give the hosts the advantage.

A boggy he pitch didn’t lend itself to free-flowing football yet Coomera’s students, teachers and tradies found a way to dominate after the break.

Speedster winger Ferdinand Annor was a constant threat up forward as the Colts owned possession and field position but couldn’t find a finish. Midfielder Slayde Scriggins attempted a cheeky long-range strike to catch out Magpies gloveman Mitch Wright in the 52nd minute and Attilio Asante produced the tackle of the contest in the 64th minute to keep the Colts in the game.

Things seemed to be going Coomera’s way when stand-in skipper Perry Moore delivered the save of the night in the 72nd minute to deny an oncoming attacker in a one-on-one situation.

However Kyren Walters looked to settle things when he netted in the 76th minute against the run of play. There was another twist in the 86th minute as Pemberton pulled one back and despite throwing men forward the Colts’ plucky charge came to a brave end.
