Burleigh to open new look QFAW season

AFL Queensland has released this year’s QFAW fixture with three Gold Coast teams set to contest a new look competition.

BURLIEGH will open this year’s QFAW division one season with a Saturday morning clash against Jindalee on April 6 at 10am.

Last year’s preliminary finalists will be looking to kick off their season with a win against last year’s division two north grand final winners as the Bombettes eye off a third finals campaign in as many years.

Changes to AFL Queensland’s female football structure have paved way for a new look competition in 2019, with both 2018 Grand Finalists Coorparoo and Aspley departing the competition.

Robina, Morningside and Jindalee, who were among the best QFAW Division 2 teams in 2018, have made the jump to Division 1.

Local footy fans won’t have to wait long for a Coast clash with Robina set to host Burleigh in round two.

Broadbeach won’t have to wait long to avenge last year’s qualifying final loss, with a local derby against rivals Burleigh slated for round three.

Broadbeach will then back it up with a round four Friday night fixture against Kedron, the team they defeated in the 2017 grand final.

Other fixture highlights include ANZAC Round, which will take place in Round 3, Umpire Appreciation Round in Round 4, and Sir Doug Nicholls indigenous Round in Round 7.

An inaugural pride round has also been introduced for round 16 after the success of Robina’s pride cup last year.

At the conclusion of the season, the top four teams will contest a three week finals series with the Grand Final to be held on August 25.
