BURLEIGH will be playing for more than a Kookaburra Cup grand final berth when they do battle with Broadbeach Robina this weekend.
Having surrendered the top spot they held for much of the season, the second-placed Bullsharks will host Broadbeach at Crowe Howarth Oval on Saturday and Sunday for the right to progress to the decider.
But the home fixture will carry extra significance for the defending premiers, who will host fundraising events across the weekend for terminally-ill Sonny Moore.
FINALS-BOUND TIGERS ‘CAN BEAT ANYONE’
The five-year-old nephew of first grade players Nick and Eddie Burton was last month diagnosed with an inoperable, stage 4 brain tumour.
Captain TJ Miller said the fundraising initiatives would include sausage sizzles, raffles and donation buckets, while a GoFundMe page has also been launched to assist the parents.
The Bullsharks will welcome back Eddie Burton, Kyle Smith, Mark Cummings and Chandima Abeykoon for the semi final as they look too arrest a three-game losing streak.
“The boys are geared up (to play),” Miller said.
“It’s not an ideal run into the semis but we get four of our regulars back this week, which will help. It’s a new season once the finals start as we saw last year.
“Broady are seasoned professionals at this time of the year so we need to be switched right on. We’re hoping to get the word out there (about Sonny) so people could get on board.”
DOLPHINS DOMINATE BEFORE WASHOUT
The Sonny Moore GoFundMe page has already raised more than $13,000 towards the $40,000 target and describes him as a “very sweet, loving, five-year-old boy who loves his family, enjoys motorbikes, camping, fishing (and) music - just like his dad”.
“His family, of course are heartbroken and in need of support for medical expenses and daily living as they will not be working during this time in order to spend as much time with Sonny as possible,” the page states.
“Donations would be appreciated, no matter how large or small. They will make all the difference and will relieve the pressure on the family at this most difficult time.”
