MEET the Jared Waerea-Hargreaves of three-time SEQ women’s rugby league defending premiers Burleigh.
Form forward Jasmin Kemp brings similar qualities to the Bears as the aggressive Roosters and Kiwi prop, according to her captain Tallisha Harden.
“She is kind of our upfront, spiritual leader and she is always that person who is doing the hard yards, getting us the metres, making big tackles when we need,” Harden said.
“So I would compare her in that way to Waerea-Hargreaves.
“She is inspirational. People love playing with her. She has had such a good season and she is just improving with every game.”
Kemp laughed when told of that comparison.
“I don’t like mucking around. I just like to do the business,” she said.
“I don’t like to talk much, I just like to have my presence felt.”
Harden is not her only fan; the 35-year-old second-rower is frequently highlighted for praise by Bears coach Tahnee Norris.
Guaranteed to clinch the minor premiership as the competition heads into the last round of the regular season, Burleigh will get a stern pre-finals test in the form of Easts at Langlands Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers have lost Karina Brown to a broken jaw but have plenty of rising talent that has helped them to second place on the ladder.
As Burleigh push to extend their unbeaten run to 10 games, Kemp revealed the meeting that turned their season around following a subdued start.
“We had a chat a few months ago just to see where everyone was at because the vibe wasn’t how we have had it the last three years,” she said.
“Us senior players just got together and had a chat about what we thought was going on and that. We just spoke our consensus to the team and everyone got on-board from there.”
