Broadbeach United have drawn inspiration from the Matildas to reach the final four of the Elaine Watson Cup

When asked how her team felt after making it to the final four teams of the Elaine Watson Cup, Broadbeach United coach Sarah Evans needed just seven words to sum up the Dolphins win over the Southside Eagles.

WHEN asked how her team felt after making it to the final four teams of the Elaine Watson Cup, Broadbeach United coach Sarah Evans needed just seven words to sum up the Dolphins win over the Southside Eagles.

“Who doesn’t love a good cup run,” she said.

“We’ve had a bit of a tough trott recently and struggled to get some results but every cup win we get helps reiterate that we can play football and that we’re a good side.”

‘LUCKY KNIGHTS:’ WHY UNITED ‘DESERVED TO WIN’

After getting two goals on the board early, Evans admitted that her side “took the foot of the pedal,” and had to fight hard to secure the result.

Gemma Hicks opened the home side’s account early, followed by Rose Argent before the Eagles fought back forcing Emily Anderson to score a late winner to avoid going into overtime.

“All credit to them,” she said.

“They pushed us and we didn’t take our chances.

“At half time, they said it felt a bit flat out there and it looked flat so we said we’d lift our intensity.

“The girls played really well.”

UNITED’S BOLD CALL: ‘I WOULDN’T CHANGE ANYTHING’

Evans also revealed that the Matilda’s World Cup run played a part in inspiring her team, with most players waking up in the early hours of the morning to watch the home side play on the big stage.

“The girls love watching and playing football,” she said.

“There’s always a bit more excitement when your team makes it far in a big tournament and it makes you want to do well when you get on the pitch.”
