Missing five players to season-ending injuries from the Premier League squad alone, the Dolphins’ grand final dream turned into a nightmare as all four sides – Coast League and Premier League reserves and A grade - crashed to defeats at the Croatian Sports Centre.

While proud of the club’s efforts in reaching the final day of the season, Premier League coach and men’s director Lee Vernon said the disaster had shown the way forward as they begin plans for next season.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t get the job done in any of the four grades but it’s a really good (sign for) the club that we did get four teams there. Maybe (there’s) a few lessons for next year about depth and things that we can build on,” said Vernon, whose Premier League side was appearing in their ninth grand final in 10 seasons.

“Even though we didn’t get any results, I’m really proud of the club and everyone that’s been involved behind the scenes as well.

“We’re disappointed to lose 5-1 (in the Premier League final), I don’t think that was a fair result. At 2-1, we really threw players forward and weren’t going to die wondering and obviously we conceded a few late goals.”
