THEY have flown under the Kookaburra Cup radar but Broadbeach Robina’s cover could soon be blown if the words of coach Shane Davis continue to ring true.

Sitting behind only title fancies Burleigh and Southport Labrador heading into their second two-day outing on Saturday, the Cats showed their ladder position was no fluke to post a composed 270 against a quality Surfers Paradise attack.

BATSMEN’S EFFORTS NOT ENOUGH FOR DOLPHINS

Leading the charge was English no.4 Tom Scriven with a classy 83, before Reece McDonald applied the finishing touches with a knock of 59.

On Sunday morning, Davis told the Bulletin the Cats were better suited to the longest form and within hours his assessment proved justified as they slumped to a 79-run one-day loss at home to mid-table Alberton Ormeau.

However, with only four 40-over fixtures to come intertwined with a run of five two-day games, Davis believes his troops are primed for a finals assault.

“We think we’re a much better two-day side than one-day side,” he said.

“There’s a combination (of reasons). From a fielding perspective, we’ve got a few older blokes who don’t move as well in the field but the main reason is our depth.

DATE DECIDED FOR CUP’S T20 FINAL

“In one-dayers you often rely on the top four or five batters but in two-day we bat a long way down, down to nine or 10. No one has looked at us as though we are a contender.

“We have (flown under the radar) and I like it that way. We’re happy to do that. We’ve been finalists the last seven years in a row.

“The plan was just to be thereabouts at Christmas time. We want to be in the four and within reaching distance (of the leaders) so we’re happy with where we’re at.”

Burleigh’s Nathan Janes was the standout performer on Saturday, taking 6-15 from 18.4 overs to help skittle Runaway Bay for 86.

HAWKS READY TO SOAR FOR MILESTONE MAN

Dayne Siede also made 82 as Mudgeeraba Nerang posted 163 against Palm Beach Currumbin.

Yesterday, Bushmen opener Zac Gayfer made an unbeaten 90 as his side cruised to an upset victory over Queens.
