BRETT Budwee will take on extra responsibility as Palm Beach’s technical director next season but insists he has no intention of walking away from his post as Gold Coast Premier League coach.
Just days after the Sharks’ finals hopes came to an end, the Bulletin can reveal Budwee has agreed to a deal with the club’s board to take on the technical director role for 2020-21.
There had been speculation the appointment could prompt the former Nerang, Merrimac and Gold Coast Knights mentor to step aside as Premier League coach after two seasons, but he said he had unfinished business at Duncan McKenna Field.
RUN TAKING GLOSS OFF UNITED SEASON
“I’d like to take this group and be successful. If I can bring in a couple of players I think we can be,” the former Manchester City apprentice said.
“Hopefully I get a player budget from the board (next season). I’m in negotiations for some players for next year.
“Burleigh won the league by a country mile this year and we matched it with them every game.”
WARRIORS, COLTS FIRE AS CITY HURT FINALS HOPEFULS
Palm Beach and Surfers Paradise are the only teams to inflict defeats on Burleigh this season, with the Sharks’ 4-3 triumph in May bookended by 3-1 losses to the Bulldogs in March and June.
While the signs for the Sharks are promising after finishing seventh in 2018, Budwee said he would look for support next season as he juggles coaching and technical director duties.
CUP TOLL NO ISSUE AS COLTS SEAL FINALS BERTH
“I will bring on a first team coach - an assistant - to help me when there’s overlap with the juniors. Football is my livelihood so (being appointed) technical director is good security for a couple of years.”
