BOND University coach Sean Johnson has vowed to lift alongside his charges when they embark on a historic campaign in next year’s Coast League One.

Johnson, a junior representative player and national junior college title winner in his native United States, will oversee the Bullsharks’ maiden Coast League tilt in 2019 after dominating Midweek Metro for the past two seasons.

But the success has not gone to his head.

“Tactically this season I’m going to be better. I don’t think I’m bad but I think that’s my area to improve, just understanding my tactics a bit better,” Johnson said.

“Player motivation is where I win, that’s where I believe I can take a strong suit because I know what a lot of these guys go through and what got me kicking (as a player). It’s about finding what makes these guys tick and every single one of them is different, which is what I find exciting.”

An academic adviser at Bond, Johnson will soon move into a recruitment role that could double as the perfect position to build the playing group from 15 to 40 for next season.

“We have such an opportunity we’re missing out on. I know students come to this university and don’t have a chance to play international competition football because we’re not finding them.

“They don’t know that there’s a team. There’s quite a bit of passion from the coach so it’s instilling that down the line.

“I think (playing on weekends) is going to pose some challenges but not any challenges that we’re not already kind of facing. Some people trying to get away for a Wednesday night game is just as hard getting away for a weekend or a Friday night game.

“For me, it’s more about the commitment of the guys. That starts with me. I want to see Bond have a footprint.”
