THREE years since moving to the Gold Coast, two kids and one Summer of Surf board win.
Mermaid Beach’s Bec Wiseman was the most experienced athlete in the field a month ago when she edged out Elysa Pierce of Wanda to claim a dramatic diving win in the Summer of Surf board final, her first ever win at the carnival.
GOLD COAST SPORTING LEGEND’S LATEST HONOUR
“It was pretty shocking,” she said.
“I got off my board well and gave it everything on the run up but in the back of my mind I was thinking ‘don’t fall over’ and with a few metres to go, I stumbled slightly.
“I think my leg cramped up but I just managed to get myself to the finish line.”
When she’s not training or racing, Wiseman faces the ever challenging task of raising her two young boys and balancing work three days a week as a radiographer at Robina hospital.
Wiseman and her husband Jared moved to the Gold Coast three years ago from Tasmania with no intention of continuing their surf careers until they walked into the doors at Mermaid Beach and felt instantly at home.
“It’s a tough balance but we’ve got a really good system at home,” she said.
“Some nights, you’re needed at home but any chance I get to sneak the beach I will and sometimes the kids come along to play down there.
“He’s (Jared) had a pretty quiet first half of the season to let me go full tilt at it but the plan was always to swap in December so he can pick up a few sessions in the second half.”
After a brief trip back home to Tasmania to celebrate an early Christmas with her family, Wiseman will take to the beach again this weekend.
MERMAID BEACH DISCOVER THE NEXT JAMES LACY
“The weather was so putrid that we didn’t get into the water for two weeks,” she said.
“It snowed the last day we were there.
“It’s been a long taper.”
Round two of Summer of Surf kicks off Friday afternoon at Wiseman’s home of Mermaid Beach before racing continues on Saturday.
“Mermaid is very much like a Tasmanian club in that it’s such great culture and everyone gets on,” she said.
“It’s not really a club; it’s family.”
