Lightning fast backs, powerful forwards and a centre compared to James Bond both in look and in style - meet the Gold Coast’s finest performers from the South Queensland Championship weekend.
CYCLONES WOMEN
Eva Doblo
Outside centre
Lightening fast in attack, Doblo continually created headaches for the defence with her speed and running lines in what were terrible conditions for attacking rugby.
Jemma Stokes
Inside centre
A powerful running inside centre, Jemma’s runs often took two or more opposing players to stop her and in defence she often forced both Sunshine Coast and Darling Downs into errors with her bone-crunching hits.
Ruby Power
Lock
Power’s support out wide provided extended attacking opportunities for the highly skilled backline, and this was matched by her work in the scrums and lineouts which got the ascendancy against both Sunshine Coast and Darling Downs.
Eva Butler
Number 8
Captain and a true leader in every aspect of her game, Butler led from the front from the beginning of the campaign. She showed her skill and experience at every opportunity from working with younger members of the squad to putting her body on the line in every carry and defensive effort she made over the entire weekend.
Hebe Backus
Flyhalf
Playing flyhalf in conditions that resembled either a monsoon or mud bath, depending on the game, Hebe was able to confidently organise the forwards while also providing the backs with clean ball in conditions that often left her opponents dropping the ball.
Jorja Cooper
Openside flanker
Cooper set the tone early in the first game against Sunshine Coast on Friday night for the entire weekend. Defensively she was everywhere and her support game and work at the breakdown was excellent.
Indya McWilliam
Lock
After being cleared from a concussion on Saturday, McWilliam did not hold back when she managed to take the field on Sunday against Darling Downs. Making up for lost time she was strong in every area of her game, particularly in the scrums and her powerful running got the team over the advantage line in almost every carry.
Eden Milton
Fullback
Eden was super reliable at the back and often had the defence turning around after nullifying multiple counter attack opportunities with her kicking. Her sideline conversion against Downs in the closing stages of the game set the stage for a grandstand finish which the girls almost pulled off.
CYCLONES COLTS
Kalani Te Heu Heu Tukino
Hooker
Te Heu Heu Tukino from the Palm Beach Rugby Club has for several years been considered too small for various representative teams and literally has been turned away. Undeterred he has finally had a growth spurt and is now a very athletic solid unit. His lineout throws, scrummaging and mobility around the field was excellent over the weekend and he was clearly relishing the chance to finally play representative rugby. Only 19 this year and with the determination he possesses he will be a standout in Colts next year and has a bright rugby future.
Bhodie Mansfield
Front row
Bhodie Mansfield from the Surfers Paradise Rugby Club is only 18 this year – he is solid and mobile and had to get special dispensation to play up in the U20 front row. He was fearless, physical, and more than held his own in set pieces and around the field. A player to watch out for in the next couple of years.
Lewis Bryson and Rogan Huntley
Front row
Front rowers Lewis Bryson and Rogan Huntley have long local club histories and this year they are playing at Bond Uni in the Colts division. Both players were impressive in both matches in particular the second match on Sunday when they had to play full games because the Gold Coast Cyclones had no reserve front rowers due to injuries. Their set piece play was strong; their defence was second to none and they were both mobile around the park, particularly Lewis Bryson. Rogan Huntley was also the vice-captain this year and lead the forwards with distinction. They are from a coaches’ perspective “warriors”.
Harrison Felton
Lock
The Palm Beach Currumbin lock played for Colts last year at the age of just 17 with a shoulder injury but came back this year and was the dominant lock of the tournament. Standing north of 6ft4 and solidly built he was strong in the lineouts and his runs with the ball in hand were punishing on opposition players trying to stop him. Felton played full games on both the Friday night and the Sunday afternoon and was awarded the MVP after Friday night’s game. He should be an automatic selection for Southeast QLD. Still young, he has a big future ahead of him in rugby.
Coby Bull
Lock
Coby Bull from the Helensvale Rugby Club is only 17 and is tall and lean – an excellent lineout jumper and fast around the field with the ability to run like a back he will be a force in due course when he puts some weight on. He was arguably the most improved Gold Coast forward as the tournament progressed. He has an exciting future in rugby.
Jaziah Fidow and Devahdray Halsall
Loose forwards
Jaziah Fidow (playing at 6) and Devahdray Halsall (playing at 8) were both very physical and highly mobile with Devahdray scoring after a 20m blockbusting run in the first game. Jaziah, 19 years old, plays seniors at Nerang and comes from a strong rugby pedigree while Devahdray, 18, plays for the Eagles in the U18’s. Both these young men are natural athletes, play smart rugby and have big futures ahead of them.
Tyler Stevens
Scrumhalf / Fullback
Tyler Stevens is from the Nerang Rugby Club where he has been their starting 15 for the last two seasons and yet he is only 19 turning 20 this year. Tyler was the starting 9 last year for QLD Country Colts (U19”). This weekend gone he was again a standout player – the best 9 on the field scoring several tries – he has a wide set of skills including a strong pass, excellent running game backed up by first class kicking skills. In both matches he played the first half at 9 and the second half at 15 and is equally good at either position. He led the Gold Coast Cyclones Colts this weekend as captain with distinction for the second year in a row and is a bolter to make QLD Country again this year. He can literally go as far as he wants to in rugby.
Luke White
Flyhalf / Centre / Fullback
Luke White is from the Palm Beach Currumbin Rugby Club where he is in his second year as starting first grade No.10/15 all at the ripe old age of 19. Tall for a back, he has great hands, a good kicking game, is mobile and is ferocious on defence. Had he not got injured in the second game he was on track to be MVP for that game. Luke can play 10/12/15 equally well and has a big future in rugby.
Josh Salsbury
Wing / Outside centre / Fullback
Josh Salsbury is from the Nerang Rugby Club and currently plays at Bond Uni in the colt’s division. He stands over 6ft 5 inches and while he prefers 15, he is a force on the wing and can play at 13 as well. His game in the second match on Sunday afternoon was outstanding scoring a 40m plus try and dominated in the air on both attacking and defending kicks. His defence is solid and on his performance over the weekend he should be a definite for higher honours and can go a long way in rugby.
Ryan Wildman
Fullback
Ryan Wildman is from the Palm Beach Rugby club – he comes from rugby pedigree (his father is a life member there) – he looks like James Bond and plays like you would expect James Bond to play on a rugby field (cool, calm, and collected). His kicking game is masterful, he runs like the wind, his positional play is faultless and on defence no one gets past him. Only 19 this year he is playing at Bond Uni in the colt’s division where he has been since the tender age of 16 and this season, he has had numerous starts for Colts 1. He has made the QLD Country side for the last two years in a row and has been a star for them. He is a bolter for Southeast QLD and QLD Country selection. Ryan’s rugby future is truly whatever he wants it to be.
U16 GIRLS
Abby Smith
Openside flanker
A strong running No.7 who is a great on-baller. Smith played a great game out wide and through the middle. A player to watch.
Aalioyah Bush
Front row
A strong running front rower who can play anywhere in the front row. Played exceptionally well with strong carries and made fantastic metres all game.
Lily Tranter
Front row
A strong running prop who is exceptional at the scrum. Great rugby IQ. A player to watch.
Ivy Smith
Front row
A versatile front rower who can also play in the back row. A tough, hard running player who is a great team player.
Taariala Subritzky
Flyhalf
A solid five-eighth who guided her team around the park really well. A bench player in 2024 she is now a starter and leader in the team.
Indies Burton
Inside centre
A strong running 12 who has fantastic rugby IQ. A wonderful team player who is an integral part of the U16 girls backline.
Te Walton
Fullback
A fast, elusive fullback who was a threat every time she caught the ball. A solid kicking and running game that is well beyond her years.
U16 BOYS
Dallas Portland
Front row
Dallas played an important role within the team’s set piece work, strong lifting technique in the lineouts, and a rock in the scrum. He was also prominent in the ball carrying department off the ruck in the tight stuff, where he fought hard to get over the gainline in wet conditions, and was very strong in the short contact around the ruck.
U14 BOYS
Coby Hill
Scrumhalf
Coby Hill continued to show his form from the previous year with some great service to his backs in slippery conditions as well as his impact on attack across the park.
Jasiah Ione
Number 8
The strong running No:8 Jasiah Ione took advantage of the conditions with some solid runs resulting in 2 tries - one a spectacular 60m effort.
Rocky- Ma’ama Filikitonga
Flyhalf
Filikitonga added some very good direction at No:10, running to space, good communication and some inventive play bending the defensive line many times.
U13 BOYS
Jaxson Collins
Openside flanker
Jaxson was solid on defence and damaging on attack. He always seemed to break the first tackle therefore always making the advantage line. The only forward to score a try and was a great link between the forwards and backs. Well deserved man of the match.
Evander Kamikamica
Outside centre
Showed great leadership through his actions in his barnstorming runs, ball play and tough tackling. Scored a 40m try off the back of some slick hands in the backs. Always vocal and always positively encouraging his players to keep going.
Liam Hattingh
Lock / Flanker
Chopped any opposition that came his way. Not the biggest in stature in the team but that didn’t stop him putting his body on line to stop some of the bigger Sunny Coast players in their tracks. His defence set the tone for the other forwards to follow. Also did well on the ball in getting a few pilfers. Transitioned easily from 2nd row to flanker throughout the game.
U12 BOYS
Sebastian Page
Hooker
Gold Coast’s captain led the team, carried the ball hard and was ever present at the breakdown.
Billy Norris
Lock
Man of the match, Norris carried hard, breaking tackles and making ground in attack. Consistently broke the defensive line and was rewarded with 1 try for his efforts.
Hudson Harley
Openside flanker
Harley was a key link in attack, strong in the ruck phase play and carrying hard when required.
Grayson Hattingh
Flyhalf
Hattingh organised the backs in attack and defence, consistently leading the line to make tackles and launch attacking plays.
Alliah Fenton-Valoa
Number 8
Fenton-Valoa relished the wet conditions, excelled in attack and defence with some big tackles and strong carries.
Jaedon Roberts
Wing
Jaedon Roberts wing was always a threat with ball in hand scoring the first try of the game. He was also strong in defence with some key tackles out wide.
