DAYS ONE AND TWO: Ambulance called as first Kings of Country crowned
A brilliant showcase of determined junior rugby union was marred by an unfortunate incident which left a University of Southern Queensland player motionless on the ground for several minutes.
In the back end of a thrilling 10-7 King of the Country grand final between the Toowoomba-based side and Far North Coast under-14s, play was delayed for close to an hour before paramedics arrived and transported the boy from the ground. Play resumed eventually, with USQ running out 17-7 victors.
Earlier the eventual winners had taken a 5-0 lead into halftime, only for the Northern Rivers unit to bounce back against a line out throw.
But soon after, the eventual victors capitalised on a sensational line break down the left-hand flank, before a slick backline movement led to well crafted try.
In the third vs fourth play off, Bond Pirates were unable to finish on the podium, going down to Maroochydore 26-5.
In the under-15s tournament, the Maroochydore Swans fended off their Far North Coast counterparts 12-0 to claim the King of the Country crown in their division.
The under-13s and under-16s will kick off on Monday.
