A SURPRISE streaker has stolen the show at a Gold Coast football game in bizarre scenes that brought the crowd to its feet.
The second half of the the Football Queensland Premier League South Coast 3 clash between hosts Broadbeach and Runaway Bay was brought to a stand still by the naked fan.
A patron from near the adjacent bowls club barred it all and jovially ran the length of the field, disappearing into the night on the other side of the pitch.
Video of the moment surfaced on social media, with spectators heard cheering hysterically as the long-haired invader soaked in his spotlight moment.
Broadbeach director of senior men’s director of football George Pentecost has been with the club for 15 years, and said this was the first time he had ever seen the act.
He said while he did not endorse the moment, it turned out to be a harmless incident and the game was able to precede within minutes.
“It was unprecedented, the first one ever at Broadie,” Pentecost said.
“He just appeared, he ran from the Broadbeach Bowls Club (end), ran the whole length of the football pitch and disappeared through the other side. We didn’t have security, we just stopped, froze and went ‘jeez OK’.
“We were just taken back of it, because it never happens. The fans were cheering but because Runaway Bay and Broadbreach are probably the two clubs with the best two crowds on the Gold Coast we imagine that’s why it happened.
“The fans went mental on the balcony, the music got turned up for the full run and that’s it, we got on with the game. The ref blew the whistle back on.
“I think the people the most upset were the losing team on the pitch, everybody else I think would have enjoyed it to a degree. It can add colour to football in Australia, but if you’re chasing a game and a clown is running through the pitch all naked it’s like ‘please get off, we need to get on with it’.”
The moment somewhat stole the thunder of Broadbeach striker Harry McMaster, who launched himself to the top of the FQPL3 goal scorers charts with 15 goals to his name for the season.
Scoring what was his third hat-trick of the season, McMaster and defender Sam Field masterminded a 4-0 triumph over Runaway Bay, keeping their hopes of claiming the premiership alive.
Pentecost said around the club McMaster was known as ‘The Tractor’ for his high work rate and ability to muscle his way through rival defences.
But he said his star attacker would not be able to do what he has this season if not for the work of new recruit, Field — who scored the other goal in the clash — and the pair had been crucial in cementing themselves in second on the competition ladder.
“He (McMaster) is more the guy going forward in that final third, he’s not a work horse in terms of defensive stuff but that’s why he’s got a good balance there with the player behind him in Sam Field,” Pentecost said.
“We just signed him (Field), he’s a new player for us and been an absolute catch for us. He came over from a club in New Zealand called Cashmere Tech and he’s like an old guy in a young man’s body, he’s way ahead of his age.
“He’s only 22, 23 and his level of professionalism at training and on game day he’s very supportive. You’ll never hear anything negative from Sam Field.
“Even in the toughest moments in the comp where we’ll be 2-0 down he’ll believe we can get the win and his teammates see that clearly and feed off that.
“He is that solid defensively that he gives Harry more freedom to go forward. If you turn up and Sam Field is injured it does take a lot out of the peoples mental strength going into that game.”
