Finals race still open as reigning premiers claim maximum points

It all comes down to the final two rounds.

Across the top two grades, five teams are fighting for the top four spots.

Premier first grade had Helensvale claim maximum points giving them fourth spot on the ladder while the weather cost Queens a chance to sit in the top four.

In premier second grade, rain looked to have saved Queens but could have cost Surfers Paradise.

We take a look at the top two grades from this weekend.

Coomera Hope Island 10-265 drew with Broadbeach Robina 0-94

Coomera started the day at 9-250, losing their last wicket inside six overs with Geeth Silva picking up his third.

As rain came and went throughout the day, not just for this match, Broadbeach battled to 0-94 from 29 overs.

Lachy Hinds top scored with 56 not out from 87 balls, while fellow opener Keegan Armstrong finished on 26 not out from 88 balls.

The match was eventually called off due to weather, leaving both teams splitting the points.

Helensvale 5-184d defeated Runaway Bay 10-54 and 10-73

Starting day two at 0-9, needing a further 121 runs to make Helensvale bat again, it didn’t take long for Runaway Bay to lose their first wicket.

From then on, wickets fell consistently with only Sam Topping showing fight, top scoring with 28 not out from 55 balls.

Chandima Bandara was again the pick of the bowlers, after picking up 4-13 in the first innings, he had a better return in the second innings, picking up 6-31 from 12 overs.

Bandara finished with match figures of 10-44 from 21.3 overs.

Helensvale claimed maximum points winning outright against Runaway Bay, slingshotting them into fourth spot with two rounds to go.

Palm Beach 10-90 drew with Queens 6-48

After bowling out Palm Beach for just 90 last week, Queens were in a bit of trouble themselves at 6-48 overnight.

Unfortunately for both clubs, their match was abandoned without a ball being bowled on day two due to watch getting onto the pitch Saturday morning.

It was the match of the round which was ultimately cut short in what could have been a very interesting finish.

Queens skipper Max Houlahan was not out 14 off 90 balls with Harrison Winton yet to score from 41 balls.

Surfers Paradise 6-201d defeated Burleigh 10-101 and 1-61

Chasing their third outright win in a row, Surfers Paradise looked for quick runs early on day two.

Lachlan Diven was stumped on 48 from 104, while Harold Jones upped the tempo scoring 37 from 48 balls.

With a lead of a hundred, Surfers Paradise declared, looking to claim maximum points against Burleigh.

The heavens opened up and rain held up play when Burleigh were 0-16, stopping play for close to an hour.

Returning just after 4pm, Burleigh shut up shop, losing just the one wicket.

The win puts Surfers Paradise into second spot two matches to go against premiership contenders.

The run home:

1. Mudgeeraba – Alberton (A), Southport (H)

2. Surfers Paradise – Palm Beach (A), Helensvale (H)

3. Palm Beach – Surfers Paradise (H), Alberton (A)

4. Helensvale – Bye, Surfers Paradise (A)

5. Queens – Broadbeach (H), Bye

Premier Second Grade – Round 15, day two:

Southport 10-167 defeated Alberton 10-131

Alberton were sitting at 4-35 at the start of day two, looking to claim their third win of the season.

But the loss of Sreejan Tarafder for two early on day two had Southport in a dominant position with Alberton sitting at 5-37.

A 54-run partnership between Dashampreet Grewal (29 from 79 balls) and captain Shane Connors (38 from 58 balls) helped steady the flow, swinging momentum back in Alberton’s favour.

Before Southport picked up the last five wickets for just 40 runs to win by 36 runs.

Bradley Holmes was the pick of the bowlers with 5-46 from 19 overs.

Burleigh 10-210 drew with Surfers Paradise 2-39

Started the day at 1-22, Surfers Paradise and Burleigh got under way just 15 minutes late despite rain continuing to fall Saturday morning.

Opener Louis Dean copped a few to the body but managed to finish on 19 not out from 59 balls.

Nightwatchman Ethan Carrick was bowled on 5 from 24 balls bringing in junior Luke Rodrigues who finished the day on 7 not out from 28 before play was abandoned due to weather.

Queens 6-96 drew with Palm Beach 10-215

Started the day on 2-17, Queens lost Morgan Guy early, then Nathan Hill just 18 runs later, leaving them sitting at 4-35.

Opening bat Patrick Tones fell for 24 from 100 balls before Gordon Mackay was caught and bowled on 25 from 42 leaving Queens at 6-94.

Play was eventually abandoned due to weather as well, leaving it the third game in second grade called off.

Runaway Bay 10-231 drew with Helensvale 5-71

Helensvale started the run chase in the worst way possible, losing opening bat Ryan Maloney on the very first ball of the day.

It went from bad to worse when they lost fellow opening batter Craig Pilbin for a second ball duck and Helensvale were sitting at 2-1 after the first over.

Michael Taylor (39* from 62 balls) and Benji Lee (29 from 22 balls) breathed a sigh of relief for Helensvale as the pair put together a 51-run partnership before Lee was dismissed.

As it happened all over the Coast on Saturday, rain came and went, causing the match up to be abandoned midway through the days play.

Broadbeach 10-152 and 5-97d defeated Coomera Hope Island 10-64 and 2-48

Coomera started the day losing their 10th wicket after just two runs, with Broadbeach bowlers using only two bowlers between them for the whole innings.

Jaden Davis picked up 6-29 from nine overs while Conan Sternberg claimed 4-34 from nine overs.

Coomera batter Mitchell Radford was the only batter to score over double figures, finishing not out on 33.

Looking to claim maximum points and battling the rain, Broadbeach took to the bowlers to try and build a strong lead.

After his effort with the ball, Davis finished 37* from 31 balls.

In reply, looking to not lose outright, captain Kade van Geyzel stood firm at the top of the order, finishing not out on 30 from 73 balls.

The run home:

1. Queens – Broadbeach (A), bye

2. Helensvale – Coomera Hope Island (H), Surfers Paradise (H)

3. Palm Beach – Surfers Paradise (A), Alberton (H)

4. Mudgeeraba – Alberton (H), Southport (A)

5. Surfers Paradise – Palm Beach (H), Helensvale (A)
