With black electrical tape wrapped tight around their arms, Mudgeeraba Nerang players honoured fallen club great Rick Davies with the performance of their Kookaburra Cup season to hand Runaway Bay its first defeat and take the competition lead back to Corbwood Oval.
Davies scored 4900 club runs across 175 lower grade innings in the decade spanning 2010 to 2020.
In that time no other Mudgeeraba batsmen has come within 1100 runs of his individual contribution to the club.
His death on Friday evening, after a short battle with cancer, spurred teams even from beyond his club to don black armbands and observe minutes of silence to remember one of the region’s most popular cricketers.
First grader Josh Nelson took to social media on Saturday morning promising he would get the win for Davies.
His first innings 84 proved the difference in a match the Bushmen hung on to win in the final over.
“It was a bit of funny, s---ty morning,” Nelson reflected.
“It was sad, Rick’s a legend who won premierships for the club and he’s got two young fellas that both go alright.
“We did the minute’s silence and both sides wore the black armbands.
“We were under the pump at 2-126 (defending 234 in the second innings) and we said, ‘Come on boys, we’re doing this for Rick.’
“We took 5-28 and got back in the game.”
At 7-143 with 15 overs to play Runaway Bay appeared beaten, until an 86-run partnership between all-rounder Stveen Graham (49) and wicketkeeper Sam Burdock (38) breathed life into the Seagulls chase.
Requiring nine from the final over, Graham was run out on the arm of teenager Griff Williams to leave No.10 Billy Walker with two balls to find five runs for victory.
Keith Morrison’s bowling came up trumps with a dot ball and a single to seal the win and leapfrog the Seagulls into first place.
“On a day like yesterday that was pretty special,” Nelson said.
“It was a sad day but we celebrated. We had a few beers and sang the club song in the clubhouse with like 100 people. Rick would have loved that - he was always the life of the party.”
Alberton Ormeau stormed to third place on the table off the back of a career-best bowling day from Will Hudgson against Coomera.
Defending a first innings score of 171, Hudgson entered the fray in the 12th over, taking figures of 7-21 to bowl out the Crocs for 97.
Second Grade’s leading wicket-taker Dan Folley impressed with his first Kookaburra Cup overs of the year for Coomera, with 3-41 figures behind only skipper Josh Henderson’s 4-17.
Palm Beach Currumbin’s middle order fightback could not overcome a horror start and dreadful finish against Surfers Paradise, who chased down the Lions’ 156 with more than eight overs and six wickets to spare.
PBC was 2-0 after double ducks to openers Ryan Kettle and Canning Mason and then 3-4 when Zane Beattie was dismised for two.
James McNeil (50) and Jainam Patel (38) steadied the fort at 4-118 before another collapse saw PBC drop to 8-126, eventually bowled out for 156.
Michael Philipson (56) led the chase.
A Kyle Brockley five-for led Broadbeach to its first win of the season, successfully defending 159 by bowling out Queens for 73.
Mick Spargo (52) and Scott Sanderson (71) posted half-centuries to lead Burleigh to a 47-run win over Southport.
Cusack gets cooking to stop Queens
A DEVASTATING spell from James Cusack has helped Broadbeach Robina to a 38-run win over Queens in their second grade clash at Mermaid Waters on Saturday.
After trapping opener Matthew Brown lbw for a duck, Cusack (4-17) ripped through the Queens middle order.
His nine-over spell included four maidens, as Broadbeach stifled Queens’ run-chase and successfully limited the visitors to 143 in reply to the hosts’ 7/181.
Elsewhere, Palm Beach Currumbin stayed rooted inside the top four with a 16-run win over Surfers; Mudgeeraba Colts won its second of the season with a narrow seven-run victory over Helensvale; Coomera romped to a four-wicket defeat of Alberton; and Runaway Bay knocked off Mudgeeraba by 45 runs at Sam Loxton Oval.
Tigers tear through Gulls
THE top of the table clash between Southport and Runaway Bay promised drama aplenty but delivered little as the Seagulls imploded under the pressure of the Tigers bowling attack.
Bay was dismissed for 66, with Brad Holmes (4-4), Dean Johnson (3-23) and Jayden Sands (2-8) starring with the ball to lay the platform for a dominant win.
Despite the best efforts of all-rounder Alvin Pinho, who collected a golden duck and a duck in a single over, Southport coasted to a six-wicket victory at a leisurely pace of 3.38 runs per over.
The Tigers now own a half-game lead atop the table.
PBC and Surfers drew within a win of the lead with their own wins over Coomera and Burleigh respectively.
Helensvale suffered its second loss in three weeks, to Broadbeach.
Junior Star of the Week: Marley’s magic unbeaten century
MARLEY Goodwin produced the best batting performance of his young cricket career to help his Helensvale White to a big win over Coomera Blue in their Under-12 North clash on Saturday.
Having retired unbeaten after reaching his maiden U12s 50 the previous weekend, Goodwin returned to the crease on Saturday and powered to another unbeaten 50, bringing his total to 104 not-out off 90 balls.
Proud Dad and coach Rob Goodwin said it was Marley’s first-ever half-century and ton – worthy of a social media post.
“I’m absolutely chuffed,” Rob said.
“We had such a great day (Saturday). I don’t often post to Facebook but I felt I had to after that.”
90s aplenty in 4th grade
TWO batsmen were dismissed in the 90s and one on 88 as fourth grade’s bowlers ultimately got the last laugh at the weekend.
Mudgeeraba Colts second drop Edward Sheppard fell on 96 in his side’s 144-run demolition of Runaway Bay at Corbwood No. 3 on Saturday.
At Elanora State School, Palm Beach Currumbin’s number three, Dylan Robinson, was run out on 95, ending his 126 minutes at the crease an agonising five runs short of the century.
PBC would go on to comfortably defeat Burleigh by 141 runs.
Meanwhile, Dylan Gula’s 88 helped Alberton post the round’s best batting figures of 7/292, as the visitors thrashed Surfers Paradise by 177 runs.
Mudgee Blue’s skid continued with a loss to Broadbeach.
Dolphins on top of UQ
ANOTHER stellar start by opener Max Bryant has the Gold Coast Dolphins positioned perfectly for a key away win over perennial Queensland Premier Cricket heavyweights University of Queensland.
The Dolphins ended day one in a comfortable position, losing just one wicket in the early run chase to sit at 1/73 needing 177 for victory at Wep Harris Oval.
Fresh from his incredible 157 against Toombul the match prior, Bryant again took the initiative on Saturday in racing to 52 not-out off 41 balls to set the Dolphins up nicely for a key result away from home.
Nathan Lyons proved immense with a tireless 22-over bowling effort that produced figures of 2-49 and included eight maidens.
Jackson Smith (3-20 off 11) made the early breakthrough in dismissing UQ opener Max Clayton for just 10, before trapping the hosts’ topscorer, Jack Clayton, lbw for a first-ball duck.
When Josh Kann bowled second drop Jano Coetzee (11 off 32) through the gate the Dolphins were in a commanding position.
James Grady (44 off 76) and Will Sanders (40 off 106) provided the only true resistance in the UQ middle-order, though once they departed the Dolphins were able to wrap up the tail in short order.
Scott Palombo’s (19 off 29) departure in the run chase the only blemish on an otherwise near-perfect afternoon for Gold Coast.
Bulls beaten as Bay soars
RUNAWAY Bay triumphed over unbeaten Bonogin in a fifth grade classic, with star all-rounder Hitesh Virmani winning the duel with the Gold Coast’s top batsman.
Bevan Marks averaged 102.5 leading into the clash but was caught out for just 13 in a seismic blow to his side’s chances in a likely finals preview.
Collin Taylor and Geoff Farmer took the Bulls to 1-114 before a minor collapse left Bonogin 9-173 at the conclusion of the first innings.
Virmani arrived at the crease at 4-57 but produced 78 runs from 75 balls to turn the tide of the match back to Bay.
He was dismissed nine runs short of victory, leaving the winning runs to Matt Cunningham (40) and Mark McKenzie with 10 balls to spare.
Southport hold top spot after a 10-wicket win over Mudgee Red, with Broadbeach, Mudgee Colts, Helensvale Gold and Alberton also in the winner’s circle.

Les’ five-for sinks PBC
LES Howard ran roughshod through the Palm Beach Currumbin top order, claiming five of the first six wickets of the innings, to propel his Broadbeach Robina to a comfortable 116-run sixth grade victory at Dux Oval.
Howard (5-23) had Palm Beach Currumbin teetering at 5/11 after his devastating six-over spell all-but assured a Broadbeach victory.
At Sam Loxton Ovals, an unbeaten 67 from Chris Howarth helped Mudgeeraba see off Bonogin Green, while Bonogin Gold survived a frenzied finish to defeat Runaway Bay by just three runs in a thriller and inflict the hosts’ first loss of the season.
Competition leaders Coomera Hope Island stayed unbeaten, and lost just one wicket, en route to chasing down Helensvale Gold’s 9/109, while Alberton Ormeau produced its second win of the season with a six-wicket victory over lowly Helensvale Green at Trevor Hammel Field 2.
Dolphins fail to match UQ
THE Gold Coast Dolphins bowling attack struggled to challenge the Katherine Raymont Shield’s most in-form batting line-up on Sunday.
UQ coasted to the club’s eighth consecutive T20 win, in a fixture that pitted the Shield’s topscoring team against the competition’s leakiest bowling side. Left 142 to chase, the Dolphins limped to 6-85 with Tara Wheeler the Coast’s topscorer with 39.
GOLD COAST CRICKET WRAP WEEK 6
BROADBEACH Robina fourth grader Scott Robson blasted his way into the history books with a stunning 111-ball double century against Helensvale Pacific Pines with a borrowed bat.
Robson, 43, launched the first delivery of the match for six runs and never let up his aerial assault to reach 209 not out at the change of innings.
It was the third-highest fourth grade score since records started in 2003 and a top 10 innings across every grade.
After scoring only nine runs with his own bat after three innings Robson decided it was time to try something different.
Wielding teammate Josh Leo’s RJR Phantom bat, he raised it for the first time after only 50 balls.
He kept up the pace to raise it again in another 58, blasting 16 fours and 16 sixes for his first double century in 25 years at the club.
“I might have to buy it off him now,” Robson said.
“He’ll probably want it back, but he’s a bowler, he hasn’t got as much use for it.”
Robson’s celebration was all the sweeter for being able to share it with his son Jackson in the middle.
The 14-year-old junior representative player opens the bowling for his old man’s team but was filling in at square leg umpire when Robson reached his historic milestone.
When he brought up 200 with a boundary against danger spinner Josh Whybird it was Jackson who raced across from square leg to give his dad a hug.
Helensvale players gave Robson a guard of honour as he left the field, his team 1-317 from 35 overs after contributions also from Vince Serci (68) and Andrew Thom (14 not out).
The Hawks never had a chance at chasing down nine runs an over.
When Matthew Fraser was dismissed for 81 his side were left rudderless at 8-165, eventually falling to a 114-run defeat that raised Broadbeach to fifth on the table and dropped Helensvale to seventh.
Ladder leader Palm Beach Currumbin was forced to split points with Tamborine Mountain after a scheduling error forced the cricketers to make way for a touch football carnival at the Mallawa Drive Sports Complex.
Tamborine Mountain was 6-131 after 25 overs when play was called off.
Alberton Ormeau took full advantage of the mix-up, drawing level with PBC on 40 competition points after a seven-wicket, 15-over chase down of Queens (97) at Trevor Hammel.
Mudgeeraba Blue were rolled for 60, days after being crowned the Gold Coast’s most dominant team by the Bulletin’s cricket writers.
The absence of leading batters Kent Tomsett, Liam Markey and Aaron Cook to third grade duties helped Coomera Hope Island hand the Bushmen a six-wicket defeat, their second loss of the season.
Mudgee’s Colts bowled out Burleigh for 102 to secure a 139-run win.
Tom Robertson’s half-century helped Surfers defeat Runaway Bay by 75 runs.
FIRST GRADE
RUNAWAY Bay have a one-match lead atop the Kookaburra Cup leaderboard after a Steven Graham masterclass blitzed Broadbeach.
Graham’s 67 runs in the first innings were beaten only by Charles Parsons’ 81 as Bay produced the top batting performance of the first grade weekend to score 271.
Graham swung into action with the ball on Sunday, taking 5-99 from 26 overs to cut off the Cats chase at the knees.
That win, coupled with Helensvale’s three-wicket defeat at the hands of Surfers Paradise, left Bay as the last undefeated team in first grade after four competition rounds.
Palm Beach edged Coomera by two runs, Mudgeeraba beat Queens by six wickets and Alberton bowled out Burleigh for 68 for a six wicket victory.
GOLD COAST DOLPHINS
THERE was no breaking the great wall of Toombul for the Gold Coast Dolphins, who were doomed to draw their round seven Queensland Premier Cricket two-day clash in Brisbane on Saturday.
With a challenging Dolphins lead of 421 the Bulls resigned themselves to block out day two to avoid defeat.
Ten bowlers chanced their arm for the Gold Coast across 98 overs but none could crack the indomitable Toombul No.6 Luke Maugeri, who played 26 scoring shots across an innings where he faced 221 deliveries.
With Queensland Bulls all-rounder Michael Neser limited to just seven overs and no Matt Kuhnemann or Nick Buchanan at all the Dolphins could not find enough strike with the ball to expose more than the tip of the tail.
Workhorse paceman Nathan Lyons toiled for 25 overs, taking 3-55, while part-timer Hugo Burdon stepped up with 18 overs to take 2-48.
Maugeri (56 not-out), Jarryd Blake (56 from 108) and Pranav Susarla (38 from 101) played their hands to perfection as Toombul’s run rate creaked and groaned, eventually bottoming out at 2.18 in the 85th over as the required rate soared past 10.
After four two-day matches the Dolphins sit eighth of 12 teams in the Cam Battersby Cup, with a single win over Wynnum-Manly in late October the only success the team has to show in the longer format thus far.
Gold Coast take on University in St Lucia over the next fortnight.
SECOND GRADE
A SIX-way tie for the competition lead in second grade was broken Sunday when only three of the pace-setting teams escaped week four with points on the board.
Southport (216) defeated Mudgeeraba Nerang Colts by 40 runs to move to first overall while Alberton dumped Burleigh out of first in a thriller decided by just 17 runs to take second place.
Mitch Brauer’s 90 helped the Hurricanes reach 170 at the close of innings while seven wickets between Harry Engel and Dasham Grewal restricted Burleigh to 153.
A half-century from CHI batsman Sam Joseph helped the Crocs to a tally of 211 to beat PBC.
Runaway Bay and Queens joined Burleigh in dropping to 50 per cent win-loss records with defeats to Broadbeach and Mudgeeraba while Surfers beat Helensvale.
JUNIOR STAR OF THE WEEK: NOAH GORRIE
HELENSVALE under-11 bowler Noah Gorrie turned in a man-of-the-match performance to help his junior Gold side defeat Runaway Bay Orange in a T20 clash at Pacific Pines Central Park.
Gorrie, in his second season with the team, took career-best figures of 5-10 from a four-over spell as Runaway Bay reached 12-143 at the conclusion of the first innings.
Gorrie stepped up with the bat to score 14 runs, second-top score of the team behind Cayden Williams, to reach 9-156 and win the match.
Already ranked 8th of 107 bowlers in his division and 266th out of 2097 bowlers on the Gold Coast heading into week six, Gorrie will take a significant jump up the rankings on Thursday after doubling his season wicket tally in a single match.
The right arm quick is making the most of his time in the under-11 age group having played up a season last year.
His father Daniel is the team coach.
THIRD GRADE
COOMERA Hope Island has taken back-to-back scalps of undefeated teams in a remarkable fortnight of third grade cricket.
Fresh off handing Southport Labrador its first loss of the season last week, the Crocs have heaped misery on Surfers Paradise to snap its four-match winning streak and build one of their own, having lost four straight to open the season.
The bowling of Paul Bushel was essential in helping Coomera defend a low total of 112 from 35 overs.
Bushel snared three top order batsmen for figures of 4-18 from eight overs, including two maidens, to help bowl out Surfers to 88.
Southport, Runaway Bay, PBC and Helensvale consolidated places in the top four with wins.
Loganholme and Tamborine Mountain also moved up the table.
FIFTH GRADE
PALM Beach Currumbin’s winless Colts came within a wicket of the upset of the 2021-22 Gold Coast cricket season against fifth grade powerhouse Bonogin.
Set 119 for victory, Bonogin dropped the Gold Coast’s leading runscorer and opening bat Bevan Marks down to No.7 to give others a chance to bat.
It nearly backfired when Marks entered the match at 5-63.
He took control of the innings to bring the Bulls within two runs of victory but was bowled going for the matchwinner, exposing the Bonogin tail.
No.9 Sam Hunt tied the match the following ball before losing his wicket, leaving Simon Neale and Daniel Hinze to find the winning run.
Neale survived five high-pressure deliveries before hitting the single to win it.
Southport, Runaway Bay, Broadbeach, Mudgee Colts and Alberton claimed wins.
DOLPHINS WOMEN
THE Gold Coast Dolphins have lost six of their last seven matches in the Katherine Raymont Shield, thumped this week by seven wickets by finals-bound Valleys at Bill Pippen Oval.
Skipper Carly Fuller (pictured) topscored for the Dolphins with 38, with all other bats falling for 12 runs or fewer in the first innings. Valleys chased down the 109 runs for victory in just 14 overs.
SIXTH GRADE
BONOGIN Green wicketkeeper batsmen Nam Oh fell one run shy of his maiden Gold Coast century in sixth grade, becoming just the 30th player to be dismissed on 99 in the region since 2003-04.
Oh had scored 99 runs from 93 deliveries when he top-edged his 94th to first slip, in the final over of the first innings.
His heartbreak deepened in the second innings when an extraordinary final over resulted in Surfers No.8 Jakov Usic blasting a six on the final ball to chase down the Bulls’ total of 228 and notch a two-wicket victory to lay claim to third on the ladder.
Undefeated Runaway Bay and Coomera both recorded wins, over Mudgeeraba and Alberton Ormeau respectively, to lock up first and second spot.
Palm Beach Currumbin opened a four-point buffer between itself and fifth-placed Bonogin Gold with a 49-run victory.
Broadbeach beat Helensvale Gold by nine wickets to sit sixth.
GOLD COAST CRICKET WRAP WEEK 5
A BLISTERING second innings chasedown has seen Coomera Hope Island flip a Halloween batting nightmare into an incredible outright victory against Burleigh in the final over.
No team had come back from a first innings defeat to win outright in the last five seasons of Kookaburra Cup cricket but that rare piece of local history now belongs to Coomera.
Burleigh skipper Michael Spargo’s second innings declaration gave Coomera 23 overs to chase down 141 runs at 6.1 an over for victory.
The Bullsharks had every right to be confident, having dismissed 10 Crocs batsmen for a combined 37 runs in Coomera’s first innings.
With the match on the line Coomera found its steel and went on the attack.
Openers Kushaal Ram and Benji Lee raced to 1-50 from the first four overs to give their side a chance.
Wickets tumbled throughout the innings but the runs continued to accrue, setting up a grandstand finish.
With two wickets in hand Coomera’s No.9 Warrick Bignell and No.10 Geoff Griffin required 16 from 21 balls.
Coomera chased down the total with five balls to spare, with Bignell blasting a walk-off boundary to end the match.
Burleigh coach Jimmy Spargo described a devastated dressing room after the match but praised his team’s bowling performance to take 18 wickets.
At Greg Chaplin Oval, a second century in three innings to Helensvale Pacific Pines batsman Harry Lickiss lifted the Hawks to the top of the Kookaburra Cup ladder after three rounds.
Chasing 166 for victory on day two, after bowling out Queens for 211 last week, Lickiss produced a matchwinning 146-run partnership with brother Sam to secure a first-innings victory and eight competition points to leapfrog Runaway Bay into first.
Lickiss scored 115 runs off 148 balls, including a six to bring up the century.
“I didn’t realise I was that close,” the 20-year-old baker went on to admit.
“I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself but I’m feeling a lot better this year than last year. I’m more confident I’m not going to get out, confident I can score runs.
“We finished second-last last year, won one game all year, and now we’re three-from-three.
“We’re showing the other teams we’re not a pushover this year.”
Lickiss’ century overshadowed a fine match from Queens all-rounder Ned Hanrahan, who took 5-27 from six overs to complement a 43-run knock in the defeat.
Surfers Paradise chased down Alberton’s 148 for a five-wicket first innings victory, led by opener Nick Williams’ 51.
Mudgeeraba bowled out Southport for a 98-run first innings victory with Mackenzie Barclay picking up 4-22 from seven overs.
Josh Nelson and Luc Hart de Keating traded half-centuries in the second innings.
PBC’s Ryan McCloy carried his team past Broadbeach’s total of 158 with a six in the 65th over for a two-wicket first-innings victory.
Runaway Bay returns from the bye next week.
Junior star of the week
BROADBEACH Robina’s Ethan Carrick produced the equal second-best bowling figures of the weekend – and first five-for in the Turf Juniors Division 2 season – to lift his team to a big win at the weekend.
Ethan’s Broadeach Blue set rivals Runaway Bay a target of 160 for victory but the visitors never had a chance in the run chase.
Ethan ripped through the Runaway Bay bottom-order, claiming a ridiculous 5-4 from his 7.1 overs, which included five maidens.
Runaway Bay could manage just 50 from 25 overs in reply, as Ethan capped his five-for with the final wicket of the day off the first ball of his eighth over.
The best batting performance of the weekend went to Bay U14s’ Zak Patel with 76 not out.
Ethan’s wasn’t the only five-for in the juniors, with Palm Beach Currumbin’s Jack Sanders (5-14) and Burleigh’s Lachlan Cramp (5-16) bringing up the milestone in Division 3, while Queens’ Division 1 player Alastair Philp (5-23) also impressed.
Second grade
PAUL Baird wound back the clock with a stellar century opening the batting for Helensvale in its five-wicket first-innings win over Queens in second grade at the weekend.
Baird (100 off 151) and opening partner Richard Sen (70 off 193) combined for a massive 204-run first-wicket partnership before the former retired hurt after reaching his big milestone.
By then Helensvale had already passed the mark set by Queens of 154, securing the first innings result, and the victors made it to 5-247 before declaring.
Spare a thought for Queens opener Toby Thompson, who also brought up an unbeaten ton (100 not out off 70) in his side’s dead rubber second innings.
Jordan Renau (52) and Mitchell McPhee (57) helped Runaway Bay beat Mudgeeraba’s Colts by 7 wickets.
Gold Coast Dolphins men
GOLD Coast opener Max Bryant produced the biggest batting innings of the Queensland Premier Cricket season to put the Dolphins in a commanding position against Toombul at the close of day one.
Bryant (157 off 103) smashed a ridiculous 25 boundaries in his two-and-a-half hours at the crease, helping Gold Coast to 5 (dec)-421 on day one at Ken Mackay Oval.
The opener’s 157 almost doubled his season total, as Bryant sent a timely reminder to the competition of just how damaging a bat he can be.
Once Bryant was dismissed, Michael Neser (55 off 42) kept the run-rate ticking over before his wicket fell at 5-290.
Enter Callum Taylor 75 not out off 111) and Xavier Bartlett (63 not out off 86) – the middle-order pairing combining for 138 unbeaten runs before skipper Trent Keep called for an early end to the innings with the Dolphins in a commanding position.
Sent in to navigate a tricky 13 overs, Toombul was handed an early blow when Nathan Lyons and Bryant combined to dismiss Nick McGill for just three runs.
Neser and Lyons continued the late afternoon assault on the Toombul top order but it held firm, with the hosts making it to 1-32 at close of play
It sets the Dolphins up perfectly for a second-straight two-day victory, with a first-innings result likely and the possibility of bonus points also on offer.
Third grade
SURFERS Paradise and PBC are the last unbeaten teams in third grade after five weeks.
Helensvale’s winning streak is over after a final-ball thriller against Runaway Bay saw the Seagulls prevail.
Chasing 167, the Hawks were in control at 7-150 with five overs to play until a run of wickets left Helensvale requiring three off the final ball.
Andrew Griffin could manage only a single before being run out.
Southport Labrador’s streak was snapped at four by Coomera in an incredible upset at Tamborine Mountain.
The previously winless Crocs bowled out the Tigers for 79 in 27 overs, going on to record a seven-wicket victory in 15 overs with the bat.
Surfers bowled out Mudgeeraba for 63 to win by 100 runs while PBC edged Tamborine Mountain by 35.
Gold Coast Dolphins women
A DELIGHTFUL bowling display from Macy Hauser has helped the Dolphins women arrest a losing skid with a five-wicket win over her former club Ipswich Hornets on Sunday. Hauser (4-19 off 7.3 overs) trapped Lucy Neumann LBW for the first wicket of the day and closed out the Ipswich innings as well.
Set 137 for victory, Gold Coast reached the target with five wickets to spare.
Fourth grade
LIAM Markey joined an exclusive club of Gold Coast cricketers dismissed on 99 when his Mudgeeraba Blue met their fourth grade Colts clubmates on Saturday.
Markey spanked 99 from just 38 deliveries – blasting nine sixes in the process – before being caught out one run from the magic ton.
His big hitting helped Mudgeeraba Blue to 7-252, before the attack led by Cooper Bamberry (4-20) limited Mudgeeraba Colts to just 137 in reply.
Colts skipper Jack Corbett was impressive with 75 off 36, but he had few friends stay long enough at the crease.
Alberton defeated Broadbeach, PBC bested Helensvale, Surfers was too good for Burleigh, Tamborine Mountain defeated Queens and Coomera knocked off Bay.
Fifth grade
FIFTH Grade master blaster Bevan Marks was back to his old tricks against Broadbeach, scoring his second century of the fifth grade season to post the highest score of the week.
Had Broadbeach not reached the end of their innings at 8-154 Marks could have scored even more.
In 74 deliveries Marks hit 14 fours and five sixes to reach 103 not out.
His side chased down Broadbeach with 10 overs to spare for a six-wicket victory, Bonogin’s fifth in a row.
Southport Labrador appears the only side capable of running with the Bulls after holding out Alberton in the final over of the match to win its fifth in a row as well.
The Tigers scored a round-high 7-198 runs in 35 overs and restricted the Hurricanes to 9-191 in the same span to deny that side their first win.
Zac Riley’s (5-12) big day for Mudgee was not enough to beat Coomera Hope Island.
Sixth grade
JACK Rodrigues ran roughshod through the Helensvale Green top order to deliver Surfers Paradise a decisive sixth grade win on Saturday.
After being dismissed for a two-ball duck in Surfers’ innings (9-123), Rodrigues more than made up for it with the ball.
He claimed Helensvale opener Jesse Whybird for a golden duck and his replacement could manage just two runs before he was also sent to the sheds.
Manan Desai saw off 12 deliveries before he too was dismissed for a duck.
Andrew Rowlands got in on the fun, claiming three quick middle-order scalps to have Helensvale reeling at 6-5 and they limped to 42 in reply.
At Sam Loxton, Runaway Bay stayed perfect with a win against Bonogin Green – but Mudgeeraba did not, falling to Palm Beach Currumbin.
Surfers Paradise defeated Helensvale Green while Bonogin Gold got the better of Helensvale Gold at Davenport Park.
