Big run chases, outright wins and match figures of 11 for 66

Big run chases, outright wins and loads of wickets across the weekend’s action for Gold Coast cricket.

Both Mudgeeraba and Surfers Paradise claimed maximum points with outright wins in premier first grade.

But all eyes will now be firmly on Mudgeeraba’s Nathan Lyons when their first grade side return from the bye in round 16.

Lyons picked up four wickets in the second innings against Runaway Bay to finish with match figures of 11-66.

It gives him a return of 16-127 since the Christmas break.

He now sits second with 31 wickets, three behind Queens’ Harrison Winton and three ahead of Burleigh’s Connor Blakely.

But it wasn’t enough for the travelling side as they ultimately fell 96 runs short.

The loss has them sitting nervously in fourth spot ahead of Surfers Paradise who claimed their second outright win in a row.

Alberton Jayden Sands was the pick of the bowlers, picking up 5-32 from 9.1 overs.

Only Hayden Taylor picked up more than one wicket, finishing with figures of 2-16 from 12 overs, including six maidens.

Palm Beach 10-167 and 5-123d defeated Southport 10-97 and 6-102

Southport won the toss and elected to bowl first on day one and it looked to be a smart decision, picking up the first wicket at just three runs.

Mudgeeraba-Nerang have the bye

Is Mudgeeraba’s prime paceman Coast’s most in-form bowler?

Is Nathan Lyons the best bowler in the Cricket Gold Coast competition right now?

Lyons has taken 12-94 since returning from Christmas, the best return across any grade to start the New Year.

He currently sits second at 27 wickets for premier first grade, eight behind leader Harrison Winton from Queens.

Across the competition, three players scored hundreds, two of them were not out, while four players across all grades took five wicket hauls.

Here at the top performances of the week.

Nathan Lyons – 7-33 from 19 overs – Mudgeeraba-Nerang

Premier First Grade v Runaway Bay

Arguably the best bowler in the competition at the moment, Lyons has now picked up 12-94 in the last two games. He collected five of the first six batters before removing Steven Graham and Harry Sullivan in the same over.

Tom Jellie – 136* from 126 balls – Alberton-Ormeau

Premier First Grade v Queens

Jellie arrived at the crease after a couple quick wickets for Queens putting Alberton on the back foot. He quickly made his presence felt, smashing 12 x 6s and six 4s in his 126 ball innings.

Madeesha Perera – 6-8 from 8.1 overs – Surfers Paradise

Premier First Grade v Coomera Hope Island

Perera was the destroyer of Coomera’s middle order, picking up five of the first seven wickets. The left arm spinner would take his final and the final wicket together, wrapping up the tail.

Steven Graham – 65 from 148 balls – Runaway Bay

Premier First Grade v Mudgeeraba-Nerang

It doesn’t look like the highest score but to be the only player to score double figures and get his side to 100 is exactly what Graham did. He batted time and showed maturity during his innings.

Ryan Soars – 86 from 167 balls – Coomera Hope Island

Premier Second Grade v Surfers Paradise

Sitting at 4-70, Coomera Hope Island were in a bit of trouble before Ryan Soars combined for a strong partnership with Ayaan Khan (30 from 94 balls) to put their side in the box seat at the end of day one.

Michael Percy – 5-16 from 6.1 overs – Helensvale Gold

Premier Third Grade v Mudgeeraba-Nerang Blue

The first change bowler, Percy did the damage through the middle and lower order, picking up the fourth and fifth wicket before then ripping through the tail.

Nathan Rudd – 6-19 from 6.1 overs – Runaway Bay

Premier Third Grade v Bonogin Valley

Defending just 174, Runaway Bay looked for someone to do damage early with the ball, Rudd did exactly that. Morgan Carter claimed the first three wickets before Rudd came on and ripped through the middle and lower order.

Chris Swan – 127 from 86 balls – Surfers Paradise

Premier Third Grade v Tamborine Mountain Canungra Blue

It is his second hundred in three innings, but the former Queensland Bull is making light work of Gold Coast premier third grade. He helped his side to 8-261, in the end, it ended up being almost 200 too many for Tamborine Mountain Canungra Blue.

Coast cricket premier grade stars light up round 15

Surfers Paradise are on the verge of back-to-back outright victories as Queens have an almighty run chase to remain in the four.

On day one of round 15, there was an unbeaten 136 from Alberton’s Tom Jellie while sixth others scored 50s and two five wicket hauls across Gold Coast’s premier first grade.

Below is the full wrap of day one.

Southport 10-129 v Palm Beach 3-92

Winning the toss and batting first, Southport lost their first three wickets inside the first seven overs to leave them 3-19.

Phil Tunnicliffe (37 from 92 balls) and Harvey Rankin 57 from 106 balls) took time out of the game and put together a much needed partnership to have the home team back in front.

Once those two were dismissed, the lower order added very little to the total, making light work for the Palm Beach bowlers.

In reply, Jared Neuhaus (26 from 26 balls) and Michael Craig (24 from 85 balls) got Palm Beach off to a strong start as they trail by 37 runs at stumps on day one.

Coomera Hope Island 10-98 v Surfers Paradise 5-168

Surfers Paradise won the toss and sent Coomera into bat and after a slow start by Coomera, Surfers picked up wickets quickly.

Coomera’s captain Jared Spies showed poise amongst a failing batting order, scoring the only score above 15 with a composed 50 from 164 balls.

But it was Surfers’ Madeesha Perera who was the talking point of the day with 6-8 from 8.1 overs.

In reply, Demons’ Wayne Phillips’ 76 not out from 68 balls set the tone early while Harold Jones continued his form with a quick fire 66 from 43 balls which included five 4s and five 6s.

Surfers Paradise lead by 70 runs at the end of the first day and will look to gain maximum points again with a second consecutive outright win.

Alberton 8-257 dec v Queens 0-14

After being beaten outright a week ago, Alberton started in a similar fashion, losing the first wicket on the last ball of the second over. Then a strong partnership between Brian Sargent (23 from 95 balls) and Corey Galloway (56 from 107 balls) steadied the travelling side before two quick wickets fell.

Tom Jellie came to the crease and cruised his way to a brilliant 136 not out from 126 balls which included six 4s and 12x6s.

Helensvale 7-143 v Burleigh

Burleigh won the toss and elected to bowl first and it turned out to be the right decision as skipper Harry Collier picked up two of the opening three wickets and was involved in the third, running out Max Trotman.

Helensvale’s Jack Lickiss showcased his reason why he is the better of the trio of brothers, taking his time with a well composed 44 from 121 balls while his brother Harry (golden duck) and Sam (10 from 19 balls) struggled with the bat.

Cole Turner also spent some time at the crease, sitting on 41 not from 111 balls and joined by James Guthrig who sits on 11 not out from 51 balls at the end of day one.

Collier has figures of 4-31 from 18 overs.

Runaway Bay 10-101 v Mudgeeraba-Nerang 3-77

Another team that was sent in and the decision looked to be the right one with Runaway Bay losing a wicket inside the first over.

It was the first of Nathan Lyons seven wicket haul as he rolled through the top order, picking up six of the first seven batters.

Runaway Bay’s Steven Graham was the only player to make over double figures, scoring 65 from 148 balls to get his side over 100.
