Local Aussie rules wrap: All the latest local footy news from leagues across NSW/ACT 28/29 June

Dane Swan kicked a bag, Mitch Robinson helped a cellar dweller claim a rare win and a pair of Tigers premiership winners helped South West Sydney’s finals chances as ex-AFL legends delivered.

All attention turned to the big boys this week as ex-AFL legends of the game took over community footy.

From the Sydney to the Sapphire Coast and all the way out to Broken Hill, there was no shortage of star power on show.

BROKEN HILL

The addition of Mitch Robinson made a world of difference for West, picking up its second win of the season in a thrilling 10.6 (66) to 8.7 (55) defeat of Central.

The 247-game AFL veteran provided a spark and two goals for the cellar dwellers, turning in their best performance of the season to grab the win.

Brock Elliott had four and Marc Purcell three as South raced away with a convincing 52-poinr win over North.

STANDINGS: South 24, North 16, Central 16, West 8

Nikki Phillips had an impressive haul of eight goals as Central held West scoreless, while booting 13 goals of their own in an 87-point win.

North outscored South by 20 in the third term to power their way to a 32-16 win.

CANBERRA

Eastlake took another step towards the minor premiership when taking down Queanbeyan 10.13 (73) to 8.7 (55).

A 32-point lead at the end of one was too much for the Tigers to reel in, despite four goals from Jack Jovanovic in defeat.

Ainslie moved into outright second after an 80-56 defeat of Belconnen.

The Tricolours led by 27 after the first quarter and were able to maintain that buffer throughout on the back of three goals from Cameron Terry.

Tuggeranong picked up its season win of the season after smashing Gungahlin 118-43, with Joseph Dunn kicking five goals.

STANDINGS: Eastlake 36, Ainslie 24, Belconnen 20, Queanbeyan 20, Tuggeranong 8, Gungahlin 0

Ainslie turned the battle for second spot into a one-act affair, smashing Belconnen 10.8 (68) to 2.3 (15).

The Tricolours led at every change, kicking five goals to none in the second half, led by three from Charlotte Canavan.

Tuggeranong had to fend off the charge of a spirited Gungahlin with a 53-22 victory.

Ava Brassil kicked four in the win.

Queanbeyan proved far too strong for Eastlake with a thumping 63-7 defeat, led by five goals from Billie Hamilton.

CENTRAL WEST

Osborne’s winning run continued with a gritty final term to down CDHBU 13.11 (89) to 9.8 (62).

The Tigers were able to kick clear with five goals in the fourth, with super-boot George Alexander booting four.

Culcairn tried hard, but were no match for the boot of Trent Castles as Jindera came out on top 98-58.

The Bulldogs forward kicked a massive 10 goals in the victory.

Rand-Walbundrie-Walla kicked nine unanswered goals in the third quarter to smash Murray 147-46.

The Giants incredibly had 12 individual goalscorers.

Henty survived a late fightback from Brock/Burrum to edge them out 14.13 (97) to 14.5 (89).

The Saints kicked five goals in the final quarter to come back from 24 down, but the Swans pulled out enough to climb into a share of seventh.

Holbrook pulled out enough in a low-scoring encounter against Lockhart, winning 58-32.

Ben Fulford had four goals from the Brookers in a battle of two flag contenders.

Howlong was on fire against Billabong, coming out on top 123-27.

They led by 72 points at halftime, with Ben Baker and Jarred Lane both kicking four goals.

HUNTER COAST

Warners Bay handed Newcastle City its first defeat of the season, prevailing 12.9 (81) to 10.5 (65).

Five unanswered goals in the third proved the difference, with Max Collins kicking a bag of five as the Bulldogs stamped themselves as flag contenders.

Terrigal Avoca was in fine form with a 128-43 demolition of Nelson Bay.

Alec Walters had five goals, while Harrison Pitt was at his explosive best with nine.

Killarney Vale kept in touch with the race to the finals after a 94-41 road win away to Maitland.

Brandon Lloyd led the way with four goals.

Cardiff came from 10 points behind at halftime to get the best of The Entrance Bateau Bay 68-49.

Jake Sullivan was crucial in the comeback with three goals.

STANDINGS: Newcastle City 32, Terrigal Avoca 24, Warners Bay 24, Nelson Bay 12, Cardiff 16, Killarney Vale 12, Maitland 4, The Entrance Bateau Bay 4

Cardiff was in no mood to mess around as it destroyed The Entrance Bateau Bay 166-0.

The Hawks kicked 25 goals in the contest, including nine from Charlotte Day.

Newcastle City was similarly as dominant, smashing Warners Bay 128-3.

Ruby Spark had six goals with Kate Handley and Isabella Sullivan booting four.

Singleton picked up its first win of the season, downing Terrigal Avoca 31-4.

Andrew McDonald had six goals for the Tamworth Kangaroos in a huge 160-43 win over New England.

Inverell maintained top spot as they thumped Gunnedah 148-27.

STANDINGS: Inverell 20, Swans 16, Kangaroos 16, New England 4, Gunnedah 0

Katrina Doak kicked five goals for Inverell in a 68-1 defeat of Gunnedah, while the Kangaroos defeated New England via forfeit.

WOMEN’S STANDINGS: Inverell 24, Gunnedah 16, Kangaroos 12, Swans 4, New England 0

NORTHERN RIVERINA

Tullibigeal turned on its best with a dominant 24.17 (161) to 7.4 (46) defeat of West Wyalong Girral.

They set the tone in the opening term with nine goals, with the Bulldogs having no match for Harry Manning (seven goals), Nick Prince (six) and Steven Hickson (five).

Lake Cargelligo continued its winning ways after downing Ungarie 128-79.

Off the back of 18 goals last week, Lachlan Robertson was strong again in front of goal with seven majors.

STANDINGS: Lake Cargelligo 32, Hillston 28, Tullibigeal 12, Ungarie 8, West Wyalong Girral 8

RIVERINA

GGGM move to outright first place after accounting for Collingullie Wagga 15.14 (104) to 11.8 (74) in a top of the table clash.

The Demons started hot to lead by 15 after one, before the Lions surged with a seven-goal second term to turn the game on its head.

Jack Powell had five goals in the win, with Marty Bowyer kicking seven for the Demons.

Narrandera came from a point down coming into the last to defeat Leeton Whitton 44-36.

Murray Stephenson fired with seven goals as the Wagga Tigers smashed Griffith 13.12 (90) to 4.6 (30).

Coolamon put a major dent in MCUE’s finals hopes after a thumping 107-27 victory.

Aiden Macauley was unstoppable in the forward line with seven goals, taking his season tally to 25.

SAPPHIRE COAST

It was all about Dane Swan as he powered Merimbula to a 24.7 (151) to 3.5 (23) win over Bega-Tathra.

The former AFL great was unstoppable with nine goals, as the Diggers played off his class to record one of their biggest wins of the season.

It was a great day for the club, with Swan and Ricky Nixon having an evening at the RSL as Sapphire Coast enjoyed its moment in the sun.

Pambula-Eden wasn’t disgraced on Thursday evening, downed by Pambula 102-70.

Luke Taylor had seven goals in the victory, while Brent West kicked five for the ‘development team’.

Narooma flexed its muscles with a convincing 83-27 defeat of fellow contenders Bermagui.

STANDINGS: Merimbula 32, Bermagui 24, Pambula 22, Narooma 22, Bega-Tathra 4, Pambula-Eden 0

The accuracy of Eden was too much for Pambula to handle, with the Whalers coming out on top 5.1 (31) to 0.3 (3).

Jesse Fulton had two goals in the victory.

Bermagui maintained a share of the top after dismantling Narooms 63-7.

SOUTH COAST

Wollongong Bulldogs are off the mark in 2025, edging out a wayward Bomaderry 9.10 (64) to 6.13 (49).

10 behinds in the first half saw the Tigers trail, before the Bulldogs kicked away in the third, with three goals to Augustin Young leading the charge.

Northern Districts survived a major scare, before escaping the Lions 57-51.

Sores were tied coming into the final term, before the Tigers were able to pull out just enough in the battle of the big cats.

Figtree had less issues accounting for Kiama, prevailing by 39 points on home soil, with Daniel Hungerford kicking four goals.

STANDINGS: Figtree 32, Northern Districts 32, Shellharbour 16, Lions 12, Kiama 8, Bulldogs 4, Bomaderry 4

Bomaderry caused one of the upsets of the season, defeating the Wollongong Bulldogs 7.7 (49) to 5.3 (33).

The Tigers had won just one game coming into the fixture with the Bulldogs in the mix for the minor premiership.

It mattered little as Aysha Sanchez booted five goals to lift the underdogs to victory.

Ashlee Maddern had three goals for the top-placed Figtree as they overcame Kiama by 44 points.

Jayda Elliott stunned with a 10-goal haul as the Wollongong Lions kept Northern Districts scoreless in a 136-point demolition.

SYDNEY

South West climbed above Pennant Hills on the ladder with a 21.7 (133) to 10.6 (65) demolition at Mike Kenny Oval.

An incredible third-quarter saw the Blues outscore the Demons by 43 points, keeping them scoreless and running away with the game.

Eddie Keogh had five goals as South West welcomed two big names for a kick.

Richmond premiership players Trent Cotchin and Brandon Ellis both featured in the navy colours, with Cotchin kicking a pair of majors.

North Shore was strong in taking down St George 104-47, spurred on by seven goals from Thomas Gillis.

They’re linked at the top of the table with Manly, who weren’t at their most accurate, but still had enough to smash Sydney Uni 16.19 (115) to 11.5 (71).

The margin was just eight at the break before the Wolves kicked right away, led by four goals from Travis Schiller.

UNSW-ES ended its two-game skid by prevailing over UTS 104-71, with four goals from Kieran Emery and three from Hugo Birks the key.

East Coast resigned Inner West to another loss, edging them out 63-49, with Marshall Poynter kicking five goals.

STANDINGS: Manly 40, North Shore 40, UNSW-ES 28, Sydney Uni 26, South West 24, Pennant Hills 22, UTS 16, East Coast 12, St George 8, Inner West 0

UTS took a big step towards the finals, opening up an eight-point gap to sixth after smashing UNSW-ES 8.7 (55) to 1.3 (9).

The Bulldogs led at the end of the first quarter, but from that point on it was all the Bats as Sophia Gaukrodger and Brianna-Lee Wade both kicked three.

Manly moved into a share of top spot after taking down Sydney Uni 29-21.

The two were tied coming into the final term, but two goals from Isabella Rudolph proved the difference for the Wolves.

Adrienne Keefe kicked five goals and Cassidy McArthur had four as North Shore recorded a 138-point win over St George.

Parramatta took a step away from the wooden spoon, downing fellow bottom-placed team Pennant Hills by 53 points.

Michala Ford had three goals as the Goannas secured their first win of the season.
