All Nations NT founder Junior Po-Ching said organising an opportunity like this is something ‘he’s always wanted to put together.’

“I want to help create some additional pathways for our junior players here, and I thought, why not create something where players here are getting the opportunities that the kids in a place like Brisbane are getting,” Po-Ching said.

“We started off with just the one team, but it’s since blown out to two junior boys teams, a senior men’s team and a handful of girls that will be playing.”

Po-Ching said there were some really pleasing signs within the community in terms of the number of players willing to put their hand up to compete.

“It’s great to see,” he said.

“There is a lot of interest in rugby union in the region, but we just don’t have the same pathways to offer as rugby league or soccer.

“We have a lot of kids with very diverse backgrounds, we’ve got a lot of local Indigenous boys as well as South Africans, Tongans, kids from the Cook Islands and Kiwis.

“That’s why we went with the name ‘All Nations’ to kind of reflect that diverse background of our players.”

As for why they elected to participate in the Pacific Festival in particular, Po-Ching said past experiences had revealed it was an ‘awesome tournament.’

“My older son played for the Queensland Kiwis side in the tournament last year, and it’s just such a great experience for them to see all different sorts of cultures come together in one team,” he said.

“It’s a massive tournament, with the Kiwi, South African, Fijian teams and more, with two or three games a day, the environment is going to be awesome for them.”
