South Adelaide have kicked clear of their rivals at the top of the Netball SA Premier League ladder as the side aims to sew up the minor premiership.

With finals in the front of mind, the Panthers rotated their bench through the court constantly, while regular starters Maggie Kerr and Jess Paradiso still had their hands all over a dominant 50-point win over Metro Jets.

Back-up goaler Bianca Drum benefited the most from the increased opportunity, playing almost a full half in the shooting circle to finsh with 20 goals from 25 attempts in the 83-32 win.

It was a danger game for the Panthers, with three weeks left to finals and up against the struggling Jets, the competition leaders were in danger of having a major lapse in concentration.

But Panthers leader Maggie Kerr wasn’t going to let it happen to her side, exploding out of the blocks with four of the first six goals to put the side on the front foot.

A couple of tough misses from Jets shooter Sam Low were pounced on by the Panthers as the ladder leaders shot out to a 19-goal lead by the first quarter break.

From there it was merely academic.

The win has put South Adelaide two wins beyond rivals Contax, who suffered a shock loss to finals contenders Garville on Friday night.

Metro Jets put up a strong fight in the reserves clash between the two sides, narrowing the gap between the two sides to just three goals at the three-quarter break, before the Panthers roared to life in the final quarter.

Bianca Drum, fresh off a strong performance off the bench in the Premier League clash, scored an impressive 53 goals from 58 attempts in a dominant performance in the shooting circle.

“We’re quite confident at the moment, but I suppose we’re still building that throughout the season,” Paradiso said.

“We haven’t been in this position before, but we’re continuing to grow as a team, we all get along really well off the court and we’re now starting to see consistent results on the court.

“We knew the games against Contax and Matrics obviously weren’t going to be easy and we knew it would take some fight, so to execute and come out on top in those games was really big for us.”

The Panthers have gone from strength to strength this season after falling just short of a grand final appearance in 2023.

Paradiso said the team had adopted a hardworking approach to the game.

“We’re just relentless in our gameplay,” she said.

“We go for everything and we never give up, any loose ball gets, we’re there backing each other up.

“In each game we’re all there for each other and I think that shows in our performances.”

Metro Jets currently sit seventh on the ladder after a tough 82-29 loss to Contax last week.

While the Jets lack experience in comparison to South Adelaide, Paradiso said the Panthers still had to be at their best.

“We can’t take anyone lightly,” she said.

“They’re a young team who just had a tough loss, so we need to be focused and make sure we’re maintaining the standards we’ve set.

“I think it’s really important for us to just take the season week-by-week at this stage and focus on winning each game we play.

“We deserve to be where we are right now, but we need to keep performing.”
