The 2023 grand final rematch was as thrilling as its lead-up, and a testament of what’s to come in this year’s HART Sapphire series.

The Ipswich Jets came out on top, but a slow first half threatened their dazzling start, with the Brisbane North Cougars leading until the final term.

Firebirds defensive training partner Lilyana Rennie (GK) and Firebirds Futures shooter Elsa sif Sandholt (GS) stood out as the game’s key match-up.

The pair battled through all four quarters, proving an even contest.

Rennie secured a number of key turnovers which the side converted early, though Sandholt’s calm nature pulled through in the fourth when Jets needed it most.

A long-awaited victory in itself, the 49-47 win gives Jets head coach Paula Stuart a positive nudge after losing the 2023 grand final after the buzzer.

The Jets trailled by nine points at halftime, before rallying in the third to reduce the margin to just two at the last change.

The final quarter saw the Jets continue their momentum surge, scoring 11 points to seven.

In the late game, the Gold Coast Titans claimed a 61-58 win over the Brisbane South Wildcats despite a slow start in the first quarter.

Already without centre court star Peta Coles (knee) and shooter Tia Crombie (ankle), the coast side was bolstered by two Ruby league fill-ins — Lily Gray and Roxy Rhind.

Gray, now in her third season with the Titans, drew on Sapphire experience from 2021 and 2022, while debutant Rhind backed up a stellar performance earlier this evening to shine under the post.

It wasn’t all bells and whistles for the sky blue side, having been down in the first quarter and only making a significant surge in the third.

PREVIEW

The Ipswich Jets and Brisbane North Cougars will open the Sapphire Series season in fitting fashion, reviving their grand final rivalry on Sunday afternoon.

The jets and Cougars showdown will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV as part of a Sapphire Series double header, followed by a cracking clash between the Gold Coast Titans and Brisbane South Wildcats.

The live stream games get underway from 4pm.

The grand final glow has not left the Cougars since last season, after they came from behind to claim a fourth-straight Sapphire Series title under head coach Liz White.

The Cougars have only strengthened their line-up in the off-season with a couple of key Firebirds young guns leading the way.

Super Netball training partners Rylee Burns and Lillyana Rennie decorate the Cougars line-up alongside state representatives Ellie Brice (WD/C) and Gemma Hutchings (GD/GK).

Brice, trekking down from the Sunshine Coast Thunder, will make her Sapphire Series debut after three patient years in the Ruby league.

The Jets roster meanwhile boasts former Titans shooter Lily Cubby as well as former Carina Tigers midcourter Ally McLeod in a pairing sure to shake up the Sapphire Series.

The main squad of Elsa Sif Sandholt, Naomi Solomona, Steph O’Brien, Chanel Dyer, Chloe Litherland, Danielle Taylor, Brooke Hams, Lily Gribble and Nora Misa have remained intact at the Ipswich club, determined to rebound from the one-point upset in last year’s grand final.

Both sides have lost experienced campaigners to the Super Netball in the off-season with Leesa Mi Mi (Cougars) headed to the Sunshine Coast Lightning and Hulita Veve (Jets) to the Firebirds.

Following the grand final rematch, the Gold Coast Titans and Brisbane South Wildcats will go head-to-head at 6pm in a southside showdown.

The Titans, led by Kristen Oxenford, are hungry for a strong start this season after a disappointing finals campaign in 2023.

Oxenford, Bryah Gafa, Emily Gilbert, Shenae Grant, Kourtnee Baird, Keshia Grant, Josie Bingham, Talitah Faifai and Jess Milne all return to the side, joined by Ruby call-up Lily Gray and former Tiger Tia Crombie.

They miss only midcourt star Peta Coles (injury) for the full season - expected return to play in late 2025.

Wildcats likewise boast a similar line-up to last season, with the additions of Kyden Tuapou (Ruby call-up), Chaisse Vassello and Millie Boehm (new to competition) and Georgia Feeney (returning from maternity break).

Titans finished the 2023 regular season with a 10-2 win-loss record, opposed to Wildcats’ 3-9.
