Garville will head into the Netball SA Premier League finals full of confidence after knocking off fellow finals bound outfit Oakdale on Friday night.

Already in the midst of a three-match winning streak, Garville extended that to four in the 69-58 victory.

In what was likely a preview of the finals like intensity both sides will face in the coming weeks, Friday’s matchup was as close as expected despite the final margin of 11 goals.

Just three separated the two at quarter-time – Garville leading 15-12 – before both entered the break tied up at 30.

A seesawing third-quarter was undoubtedly the highlight term of the contest, with the two trading early goals after the break.

Three consecutive goals from Garville’s Lenzie Guidera then gave the eventual victors a handy three-goal buffer, with Oakdale unable to make a dent in that for the remainder of the quarter.

They carried that momentum into the final quarter with a 5-0 run midway through the final term snuffing out any chance Oakdale had to recover.

Guidera finished with 39 goals for Garville while Oakdale’s star shooter Asha Thurlow was the game’s top scorer with 49.

In the reserves matchup, it was also Garville that won with a 57-47 result.

Garville coach Kristy Leonard-Downs knows her side gives up plenty of size and height to rivals Oakdale, but it is a challenge they aren’t shying away from.

The two sides are deeply entrenched in Netball SA Premier League’s top four, and will be searching for much-needed momentum on the eve of finals.

Garville are on a three-game winning run, but are adamant the third-place Oakdale cannot be taken lightly in one of the most highly-anticipated matches of the season.

“Getting some players back into our line-up, like Phoebe Bonner and some other futures girls, has been big for us lately, just solidifying our options and rotations,” Leonard-Down said of her side’s recent run of form.

“We haven’t been taking anyone lightly and we want to take that approach into tomorrow night and make sure we’re prepared for a very good team in Oakdale.

“We know they’re one of the biggest teams in the league and have a tall shooting circle so we need to be ready for that.”

A finals side last year, Garville has showed a lot of improvement this season across the court and has now emerged as a legit premiership contender.

Leonard-Down said her and her players were not getting ahead of themselves and would focus on continuing momentum heading into the 2025 finals series.

“Finishing top two and having a second chance would be a great reward for all the hard work and it’s something we’ve spent a few years building to, so we’re focused on that.

“Getting a win this week and just continuing to play our way would be big for us – knowing that we’d be entering finals coming off of a winning run.

“We still know that finals is a different ball game though and we won’t be taking anything for granted.”
