NRL Schoolboys live stream: Illawarra Sports v Hunter Sports, Matraville v All Saints Maitland is OFF

Hunter Sports have continued on their winning ways, scoring 11 tries in putting Illawarra Sports to the sword. With a finals spot in the offering, next up is Erindale College. Relive all the action.

Replay: Hunter SHS v Illawarra SHS - Peter Mulholland Cup Round 2

Please note: Matraville have forfeited their clash with All Saints College, Maitland. Unfortunately, due to technical issues, there was no commentary on the Hunter v Illawarra game.

It was as clinical as it gets as Hunter Sports High School secured a brutal 62-6 victory over Illawarra Sports High School at Maitland Sportsground on Tuesday.

Hunter, who are now two from two after beating Hills Sports in their opener, had control of the match within 90 seconds, with Ethan Jarmain securing the first try.

They scored 11 tries, including six in the first half. Lock forward Jarmain led the try-scoring blitz, bagging a hat-trick, while Jaylan Bishop planted two.

Toby Winter, Beau Hill, Patrick Slade, Brayden Skuthorpe and Wyatt Katon all contributed to Hunter’s impressive scoreline, while Kyran Blair converted nine out of 11 tries.

Katon scored one of the best tries of the NRL Schoolboys season so far, taking the ball end-to-end off a restart in an impressive show of speed.

Illawarra were finally able to get on the scoreboard in the second half, capitalising on a Hunter mistake close to their line.

Skipper Tyrone Amone bulldozed through the Hunter defence with brute strength to post a four-pointer, which was converted by Kade Forbes.

The brief glimpse of points for Illawarra was quickly stamped out however, with Hunter scoring another four tries before the final whistle.

The result sets up an enticing final round clash for Hunter who go on to face Canberra side Erindale next Wednesday.

PREVIEW

Bouncing back will be the theme of the day in the Peter Mulholland Cup as a double-header at Maitland Sportsground on Tuesday features three teams coming off opening defeats.

All Saints College Maitland, Illawarra Sports High School and Matraville Sports High all fell to heavy first round loses and will be desperate to keep their campaigns alive with a win in their second hitout.

Hunter Sports High is the only school playing on Tuesday to emerge as round one winners thanks to a 26-12 victory over Hills Sports High.

Home team All Saints kicks off the day at 10.50am and will be out to atone for its promising, but ultimately disappointing, 38-16 loss to competition heavyweights Patrician Brothers, Fairfield.

They line up against a Matraville side who are sure to be smarting after losing 50-0 to Patrician Brothers, Blacktown.

“We went really well,” said All Saints coach Nathan Koen.

“It was probably one of those games where the halftime bell came at the wrong time for us. We scored just on the bell and led 16-10. We had all the momentum leading in (to the break) but pretty much spent the second half going backwards.

“We’d give away a cheap penalty or drop the ball coming out of trouble, they’d score a try and we just couldn’t get any momentum back. It just felt like the whole thing went backwards in that second half.”

With a strong contingent of Newcastle Knights’ junior rep players in their squad, All Saints have plenty of quality across the park.

“We’ve got a strong front-row with an Australian Schoolboy in Cody Hopwood there. We’ve also got Jack Hilliar, who didn’t make the Australian Schoolboys last year but should go nice and close this year,” said Koen.

“We’ve got Nate Wilson, one of the forward rotations who was with the Knights’ Harold-Matts this year. He’d be six foot four, he’s a big lump of a kid.

“And our halves are nice and settled. We have a young half in Chase Butler, who’s our six and Jack Thompson, who actually played in the winning Warriors Harold Matts side, at halfback. So our front row and halves are really strong and we’ve got a couple of good back-rowers.”

Indeed, Roy Simpson, the son of former Newcastle, NSW and Australia representative Steve Simpson, will play on one edge, with Knights’ junior rep player Darcy Jones lining up on the other.

Given the change in competition structure – which now sees the top two teams from all four NSW groups progress to the quarterfinals – Koen said there is still plenty to play for despite his side’s round one loss.

“The format has changed this year, so you still can still get through with two wins, whereas before you almost had to win all three,” he said.

And while All Saints have plenty of quality players, they will also have a 14th man present in the form of a healthy slew of supporters, who will make the short walk from class to the Maitland Sportsground to cheer on their schoolmates.

“It’s something we’ve done over the past three years. The school has organised to bring down a group of school students to watch,” said Koen.

“We’re tying that into the Mark Hughes Foundation beanie day – Mark Hughes is an ex-student of the college – so we’re doing a bit around that to promote the game and bring the students down, so it should be good fun.”
