PBC SHS closed out a successful hit and run mission with a 30-10 win over Marsden SHS in a highly competitive Langer Trophy clash at Marsden Mako’s Shark Tank.

Palm Beach Curumbin won with Reds captain Zane Harrison leading the way against willing rivals, who were inspired by strong performances from No.13 Tupou Francis and prop Mace Andrew.

With fullback Ray Puru back from injury, PBC showed signs of looking more like the squad which had set such a high standard across the past decade.

After a sizzling individual try by Marsden SHS fullback Adaquix Luke had opened the scoring, PBC SHS worked their way into the match and found their groove before Marsden SHS regathered for a spirited late rally.

Leading 18-6 at halftime, PBC were first to score in the second half when interchange dummy half Jai Bilish burst clear down the centre and found Harrison supporting on the inside.

Marsden, with Francis, Andrew and prop Benji Quinlan persistent, then rallied to close the gap before PBC SHS forward Marley Igasan finished the scoring late.

In the first half, PBC five eighth Marley McLaren played at speed to generate enough momentum for his centre Sam Stephenson to drive hard at the line and score. It was 6-all after Harrison’s conversion from the sideline.

Seven minutes before halftime three of PBC SHS’s big guns, - Harrison, Jac Finigan and Puru - combined to run in a 35m try, delivering their side a relieving 12-6 lead.

Halfback Harrison then added another try on the cusp of halftime and it was 18-6 at the break.

WALTERS CUP

Marsden SHS snared a dramatic, last second 20-18 victory over PBC SHs in a mini-classic this afternoon.

Marsden SHS five-eight Nathan Phelps kicked a late penalty from wide out in windy conditions to snatch the game.

Phelps is used to pressure, having two seasons ago kicked a long range golden point field to give his former school, Alexandra Hills SHS, a premiership.

It was a tremendous game which started out so well for PBC SHS who dominated early to lead 12-nil.

But Marsden SHS played their way back into the contest with two enterprising right side raids that led in two tries, cutting the deficit to 12-8.

Marsden SHS centre Mairangiatea Walker lit up the match with a brilliant individual burst down the sideline to put his winger Ezra Button over to score 18 minutes from fulltime.

But a six again following a charge down, and back-to-back penalties waved in the direction of PBC gave the Reds a flood of possession which second rower Max Wood turned into a try. It was 18-all and anyone’s match.

Momentum which had shifted in the last third of the first half toward Marsden SHS, due to effort and energy on both sides of the ball.

From a 12-point deficit Marsden hit the front 14-12 early into the second half when Marsden’s defensive pressure led to a lost ball chance for prop Haki Kennedy who rumbled over from close range. Nathan Phelps conversion put his side ahead.

The potent duo of Harrison and Stephenson have each only played one half of football across the opening of rounds, with a need to rest and other representative commitments keeping them largely out of the PBC starting side.

Along with, Harrison and Stephenson – who cracked the Australian Schoolboys team – Jack Finnegan and Sunny Kama were the other PBC talents to feature for Queensland at the ASSRL national championships.

“The boys will come back after that carnival and be itching to play back at school knowing there’s no more distractions and no more interruptions, they can just focus on school footy so that will be really good,” PBC coach Tim Maccan said.

The Reds will also welcome back fullback Raymond Puru who had been absent after breaking his hand the Mal Meninga Cup, allowing a first-look at how their full strength line-up will perform.

“Hopefully everyone’s back on deck, everyone’s healthy, and we can keep moving forward as a strong team,” Maccan said.

The Reds mentor is expecting another physical outing against Marsden, who have an identical record to his side with two wins and two losses.

Interestingly, both PBC and Marsden’s only two wins have come against Redcliffe and Caloundra.

“Marsden are a strong and physical team, they’ve got lots of speed on their edges and their outside backs are quite fast,” he said.

“They’ve got a great five-eighth in Javan Andrews, they’ve got another state player in Hayden Watson who’s quite dynamic at dummy half.

“Their forwards will be big and strong as always and it will be a physical game.”

There was a silver lining to the bevy of absences that hindered PBC, with Callum Bowles emerging as a diamond in the rough that covered a number of positions exceptionally.

“He played centre while Sam was away and fullback as well, Callum’s done a great job filling in those roles and been really good in what he’s done on the field,” Maccan said, while also lauding the work of Torino Jackson over the past two games.

“(Torino’s) just come into the team and he’s done his job really well in our squad.”
