Hoisting the national title for Palm Beach Currumbin has been Zane Harrison’s dream for the past six years.
On Wednesday, dreams became reality for the Titans young gun.
Harrison, who continues a long line of premier playmakers to emerge from the hallowed halls of the Gold Coast nursery was only a fresh-faced Year 7 student when he watched on with awe as Tom Dearden and Toby Sexton masterminded a NRL Schoolboys Cup national title heist in 2018.
Fast forward six years, and 12 months on from the heartache of being whipped at the post by Westfields in last year’s national final, Harrison finally got his chance to join his former idols in school folklore.
“This is everything we have ever wanted since Year 7 watching people like Tom Dearden and Toby Sexton win it back then,” he said. “It is just the dream.
“It is such a good feeling. I was speechless. I was crying.
“It was a tough loss last year and we knew we didn’t ever want to feel that again. This is the best feeling, I can’t explain it.”
Harrison had a hand in everything, setting up all three of the Reds tries and booting rivals Patrician Brothers Blacktown into submission with his long-kicking game.
But no kick proved more crucial than the final one, sending a bomb skyward to give Beau Hartmann a chance to steal the national title in the final 90 seconds.
He did, to rapturous applause from the local faithful at Cbus Super Stadium.
It could become a common sight at the stadium in the next five years or so with both players locked up on long-term deals at the Titans.
It was a fact not lost on the young playmaker.
“It feels pretty good being out there, it feels like home, so I am glad I am staying at the Titans.”
Harrison was named player of the match in the grand final and also won the Peter Sterling Medal as the player of the NRL Schoolboys Cup season.
He joins Dearden and Ryan James as fellow Palm Beach Currmbin players to win the medal.
