If there is one man who knows a thing or two about perseverance, it’s Anthony Don.

The former Gold Coast Titans cult hero had to wait until he was 26 to make his NRL dream come true. He went on to play 152 games for the Glitter Strip club, and is the Titans all-time leading try scorer.

While his club struggled to make an impact, finishing in the finals only once across his eight-year tenure, Don became a household name through sheer grit and determination.

It is why when he speaks about the same qualities in Queensland schoolboys champions Palm Beach Currumbin, you listen.

The Titans development coach is part of an impressive Palm Beach Currumbin coaching staff, which helped steer the school side into the NRL National Schoolboys Cup final on September 13. The national final will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV.

And the former NRL star believes the squad is ready for the challenge that awaits them in the form of Sydney juggernauts Westfields Sports High.

“It is awesome to see how (the boys) have grown, not only as footballers but as young men,” Don said.

“Football is a tough game and they have had to play some really tough footy in the south east corner.

“The boys started the season quite slow. They lost a few early and drew a couple, so it has been a slow build. But they are playing some awesome footy at the moment and it is real special to be part of the best schoolboys footy side in Queensland.

“The main thing they have improved upon is how hard they work and how tough they have been on the field. It is an awesome achievement (to play in a national final).”

Palm Beach Currumbin capped off a resurgent finish to the Queensland schoolboys league season with a dominant Phil Hall Cup final performance, defeating St Patrick’s College, Mackay 28-0.

A PE teacher at the Gold Coast school, Don has worked under Palm Beach Currumbin head coach Tim Macan for the past two seasons watching the development of the players very closely in his role as an on-field trainer.

It also helps in his role as a coach in the Titans Elite Development System, which is focused on teenage players across the southeast corner and into the NSW Northern Rivers region.

“There are a lot of kids that cross over between the Titans and PBC. They are great kids and it is awesome to see how far they have come,” Don said.

The NRL National Schoolboys Cup final will be played at Allianz Stadium on Wednesday, September 13 as part of a massive triple header which includes the NSW Schoolboys Trophy final and inaugural National Schoolgirls Cup final between Hills Sports High and Mabel Park State High.

Watch all three matches live and exclusive through KommunityTV across News Corp Australia’s Queensland and NSW mastheads.
