That’s the driving force behind the charge of Patrician Brothers College, Fairfield as it prepares for this year’s tilt at the Peter Mulholland Cup.
The 2022 premiers were knocked out in the play-in stage last year and they’re looking to push further this time around.
First up Patties will face Hunter Sports High at New Era Stadium, Cabramatta on Tuesday with the match exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV.
Former NRL star and New Zealand international Frank Pritchard is at the helm as coach, and said he wanted to instil a sense of pride in the two blues.
“Being a new group, we did a camp at the school and spoke about what the jersey meant and who wore it before them,” Pritchard said.
“We wanted to give them an understanding of where it came from and playing the Patrician Brothers way.
“We thought that was an important way to connect as a group.”
The mindset throughout the lead-up to the season proper has been centred on forming a cohesive defensive unit, with Pritchard wanting to establish a steely mentality among the group.
“For us as a team, we had a few defensive errors. We’ve wanted to fix up our three-man and two-man tackles and goal line defence,” he said.
“We’ve worked on that and had a couple of sessions with the Cabramatta U19s, just to practise getting bodies in front of people.
“Timing and tempo has been another focus, especially in attack.”
Manager Lisa Coluccio said while youth will be a key part of the side in 2025, their leaders are set to create their own piece of history.
“We’ve pretty much got a younger squad and don’t have many returning from last year,” Coluccio said.
“This year will see for the first time in Pats history, both our captain and vice-captain are First Nations players.
“Jeziah Papa from the Roosters is the captain and South Sydney’s Soul Tuiletufuga is the vice-captain.
“They’re handling it really well. They’ve really stepped up. We run a First Nations program at the school with 40 boys. They’re leaders there and they’ve transferred their skills and leadership over to the senior squad.”
The broadcast of Patrician Brothers Fairfield’s opening round clash against Hunter will be live from 12.30pm on Tuesday.
