This season hasn’t exactly gone to plan for Illawarra Sports High.
Winless in both the Peter Mulholland Cup and Schoolgirls Cup to date, a finals appearance relies on big wins and fortuitous results to fall in their favour.
Their finest mathematics students are crunching the numbers on how they can advance.
But what’s not in question is the school will be absolutely pumping for the final round of fixtures on Wednesday.
The double-header will be broadcast live and exclusive on KommunityTV from 11am with the hosts to face Central Coast Sports College in Schoolgirls acton before facing St Dominics in the Peter Mulholland Cup.
For the first time in over a decade, Illawarra Sports High will play host to games, with a big student contingent on hand to cheer on their classmates.
Head of sport Amy Child has been at the school for 13 years, and said it’s a delight to be able to have elite-level football back on school grounds.
“More recently there was Covid and in 2022 there was nothing but rain,” she said.
“Drainage has been improved (on the grounds) and it’s pretty good now. We’re finally back to it.
“It will be good to have senior games here. We’ve had the 14s and 16s, but it’s the first time we’ve had a senior game since I’ve been here in 2012.”
Wednesday is shaping up as a bumper day with both grades set to play in front of the entire Illawarra Sports High cohort.
“It makes a big difference,” she said.
“The whole school will be going, so they’re pretty excited.
“The players are excited too. They haven’t had the chance to play at school before (in this grade) and the atmosphere will be amazing.”
The campaign hasn’t been one without challenges for ISHS, with the girls without the services of HNWP talent Armani Tanioria due to injury and the boys fielding a group with a host of 16-year-old players.
Still, there are green shoots for the program moving forward.
Jaxon Ballinger and Oliver Burton are Steelers young guns who are thriving in the outside backs after strong years at the Harold Matthews Cup level, and will look to finish the year on a good note against St Dom’s.
The forward duo of Asher Chapman and Mason Andrews are in the same boat, as high level players who played a key role in the success of the Steelers in 2025.
As for the girls, who are coming up against Central Coast Sports College, Ella Churchill shapes as a key player at the back, having two years of Lisa Fiaola Cup experience under her belt for the Rabbitohs and Steelers.
Madison Hemopo will lead the charge at halfback as they look to pick up their first win of the season after performing well against the might of Westfields Sports.
