Endeavour Sports High has put itself in complete control of Pool C in the Peter Mulholland Cup after another commanding performance on Friday.
A 28-0 shutout of Patrician Brothers Fairfield means the Caringbah school is the only side in the pool with two wins in the opening two rounds.
The match was exclusively live streamed by KommunityTV. Watch the full replay above.
Windy conditions met the two sides at Sharks Stadium and the young Pats outfit made life tough for their high-powered hosts in the early exchanges.
It took until the 13th minute for last year’s runners up to break through when halves partners Jack Schumacher and Liam Challenor linked up to put Jaylon Herron over on the left to open the scoring.
Patties were not deterred though and continued to provide stout defence with fullback Izak Isdale also causing problems offensively.
But just as Fairfield looked like they would hold their more fancied opponent to one score in the first half, the dam wall broke.
Endeavour went to the right but then quickly moved the ball across the field where an early pass from Blake Watman found Lisiate Mackay-Filihia.
The centre spun away from two tacklers, bounced around another and crossed for one of the tries of the day on the stroke of half-time.
Back-to-back big runs straight after the break from skipper Tom Dellow and Challenor signalled their side’s intention to put the foot on the throat – and just one minute into the second half Endeavour added another score.
12m out from the try line, Jett Brookfield looked back inside and found a charging Blake Watman who steamed through four Patties defenders to plant it down.
Puna Mataele put any idea of a Fairfield comeback to bed shortly after when he broke the line and showed some serious speed to streak away from the opposition fullback.
Brookfield then put the icing on the cake with a big dummy and slicing run before just reaching over the line.
It was a second-straight defeat for Patrician Brothers Fairfield and leaves it anchored to the bottom of Pool C.
Endeavour meanwhile sits top with a 2-0 record with Hunter Sports and Farrer MAHS each holding 1-1 records going into the final pool round.
The Sutherland Shire school has scored 68 points and conceded just four so far this Peter Mulholland Cup season.
PREVIEW
They have the most feared forward pack in the NRL Schoolboys Cup and a pair of representative calibre halves steering the ship, but what has impressed Endeavour Sports High coach Dave Howlett most has nothing to do with talent.
The experienced mentor highlighted his team’s mentality and determination as the key pillars to their success ahead of a crucial Round 2 clash with Patrician Brothers Fairfield.
The Peter Mulholland Cup clash will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV on Friday.
Endeavour are coming into the contest off the back of a dominant 36-point opening round win, built off a foundation of hard work and pride in what they do.
“It is really enjoyable to see the boys who didn’t have leadership roles in the team last year, they have sought out that leadership this season,” he said.
“They experienced what the Year 12s did for them last year and they have wanted to carry on that. If we had to say who was in our leadership group, it would be over half the team.
“The boys are passionate about the jumper, the school and each other … and it shows.
While Australian Schoolboys representative Tom Dellow is a clear leader in the middle of the field, he has been joined in the forwards by Kiwi recruits Hudsyn Frost and Jake White, while backrower Blake Watman has gone to another level this season.
“(Our forward pack) definitely impressed me in Round 1, they work well as a unit,” Howlett said.
“One advantage is that while our starting pack is very strong, the boys on the bench are proving they are just as strong. We don’t lose anything with our momentum or strength.
“It has been a while since we have had that depth.”
Endeavour’s new-found depth will surely be tested against a Patrician Brothers Fairfield side which has built its success off its power game.
Coached by champion Bulldogs front rower Frank Pritchard, the proud rugby league nursery is coming off a tough opening round loss against Hunter Sports High.
