The Cathedral College has snuck home in a seesawing Dolphins Cup thriller against Emmaus College.
A last-gasp try to powerhouse lock Alekisio Siale sealed the 20-14 victory but it was edge-of-the-seat stuff as the teams battled it out in a Round 1 classic.
They went try for try in the first half to be locked at 8-all at the break, with no joy for either kicker.
Centre Jake Coomber proved a handful on the left edge, finishing with a hat-trick for the victors.
His two tries in the second half gave TCC some breathing room at 16-8 but Emmaus was far from done.
Experienced halfback Will McLaughlin was working tirelessly to conjure up some magic with his brilliant running game and deft kicking.
The reward came when centre Hudson Keepie crashed over with just four minutes left.
McLaughlin landed the only conversion of the game to make it 16-14 and set the stage for a grandstand finish.
Emmaus was launching one last attacking raid before Siale intervened, snatching the ball and running in a try out wide with just seconds left on the clock.
REPLAYS
Emmaus College v The Cathedral College (QLD Schoolgirls Cup) 2025 QLD NRL Schoolgirls and Schoolboys Cup Round 1
The Cathedral College open girls unleashed their attacking flair as they kicked their Dolphins Schoolgirls Cup campaign off in emphatic fashion.
The talented outfit ran in five tries to one in their 24-4 win over Emmaus College in the competition opener.
After scoring just the one try in the opening stanza, they cast off the shackles in the second.
They clicked into gear, with their star prop Alexis Bukowski scoring twice as they showcased the exciting style of play that took them to the Queensland schoolgirls final last year.
Prop Rachel Oakley was a standout, her barnstorming runs providing plenty of go-forward, while halfback Maddie Johnson and hooker Josie Wogand were also prominent in the victory.
Emmaus never gave up and were rewarded with a try to utility Ella Gleeson late in the second half.
Emmaus College v The Cathedral College (Dolphins Challenge) – 2025 QLD NRL Schoolgirls and Schoolboys Cup Round 1
A penalty conversion after the hooter put an exclamation mark on The Cathedral College’s convincing Round 1 win in the Dolphins Challenge.
The team laid the foundation for its 26-6 victory over Emmaus College with three first-half tries.
Emmaus clawed back the 14-point half-time deficit with an early try in the second half but TCC’s defence thwarted any further attacking opportunities.
Two more tries to the leaders sealed the result.
PREVIEW
A hulking forward pack will be a key weapon in The Cathedral College’s arsenal as they hunt their first Dolphins Cup title.
The Rockhampton nursery will look to get its campaign off to a winning start in their Round 1 clash against Emmaus College on Tuesday, June 3.
It will be part of a massive triple header of schools league action with the two proud nurseries clashing in the Dolphins Challenge (Year 10) and NRL Schoolgirls Cup on the day.
You can watch all the action, with all the games being exclusively live streamed on Kommunity TV.
The Cathedral College coach Tony Martin said his troops were itching to get on the field after being in training since before Christmas.
“Up until now they’ve done everything right and we’ve seen some major improvements over the last few months,” he said.
“The first couple of games are more about trying to learn our style of play and what works for us.”
Martin said much of the team’s game plan would be centred around its formidable forward pack led by Cowboys-contracted Tongan enforcers – 118kg Epafelasi Noa and 114kg Alekisio Siale.
The duo, who tip the scales at 118kg and 114kg respectively, will provide plenty of punch up front.
“They provide us with size that we probably haven’t had in the past but there’s some other boys there – Zac Bateman, Parker Gallagher, Parker Hunt – who also bring some size and experience and who have played at a fair level,” he said.
“We’re pretty strong through the middle and that will be somewhere we look to target in our games.”
Emmaus coach Mitchel Smith is excited for season kick-off, saying this year’s team had a similar feel to his Cup-winning team of 2023.
“These boys have come through the ranks together, and connection is something we’ve talked a lot about,” he said.
“When we’re on, we’re on and when we’re connected we’re a hard team to beat.”
Smith has made several key positional changes this year, with Harri Meilland moving into the halves and skipper Lathan Mcmeeken switching from hooker to fullback.
Emmaus has played several trial games, with all players getting some good minutes under their belts.
“We know TCC are going to be a good team but we just need to worry about ourselves and what we can do,” Smith said.
“Come Tuesday, we’ll know just where we’re at.”
