FINALS WRAP
U20 WOMEN GOLD
Queensland v New South Wales
One of the best individual performances in a final from Ruby Perkins has led New South Wales to beat Queensland at the under-20 women’s national basketball championships.
NSW won 69-64 but the day will forever belong to Perkins.
The point guard was kept scoreless in the first half as Queensland dominated and took a six-point lead at the main break.
But she wouldn’t stay scoreless for much longer.
Perkins landed two threes in the space of 50 seconds after the halftime restart as she lifted NSW back into the contest.
When the third quarter was over she had 18 points, including four threes and a couple of rebounds to give NSW a five-point lead. It rattled Queensland.
And despite Queensland coming back in the final term, leading at one stage 60-59, NSW responded with Perkins leading the charge.
She would score seven points in the final term to finish with 25.
The Maroons entered the contest as the only unbeaten team in the competition and, at times, led by 10 or more points in the first half.
But when Perkins fired there was nothing Queensland could do to stop the run.
IB MEN GOLD
South Australia v Victoria
Victoria has surged to a second straight Ivor Burge men’s title with a dominant win over South Australia.
The home state won 116-51 in a contest which was close early before Victoria got on top in the final three quarters.
The win completed a dream tournament for the team with Victoria not only winning all matches but scoring more than 100 points a game. The side also won all matches by an average of 92 points.
Victorian duo Jack De La Motte and Dylan Cheyne led from the front, with the former hitting a game-high 39 points.
Cheyne almost had a triple double, scoring 15 points, dominating the boards with 20 rebounds and providing eight assists.
IB WOMEN GOLD
Victoria v Australian Capital Territory
Victoria has continued its dominance of the Ivor Burge women’s championships, beating ACT to take out the 2025 edition.
The home team won 94-51.
Victoria held a seven-point lead at the main break before dominating in the third quarter to push the margin out to 16.
It was then party time in the final term as Victoria ran away from their rivals.
The victory completes a perfect campaign for the team, with Victoria winning seven matches.
The triumph is Victoria’s 21st championship in women’s IB events.
Victorian captain Jessica Mcculloch led from the front with 22 points and an incredible 15 rebounds.
