It’s been three years since Immanuel College’s overwhelmingly dominant top basketball side has tasted defeat.

Now the Novar Gardens school’s open girls team – winners of the past nine consecutive Independent Girls Schools Sports Association titles – will look to claim the ultimate prize.

Immanuel will take on the country’s best as the sole South Australian girls representative at the Australian Basketball School Championships later this month.

For the first time, News Corp will exclusively live stream the country’s top schools tournament through KommunityTV.

After finishing runner-up in 2018 and fourth in 2019, Immanuel principal Kevin Richardson said the school’s basketball program was built on quality coaching and a strong tradition among player.

The team is led by Jimmy Alexander, who took over as coach from former Adelaide Lightning mentor Tracy York.

“Winning the IGSSA state championships for nine years in a row and as a school we’re pretty pleased with that,” Richardson said.

“Over the years we’ve had really strong, quality coaches and then likewise we’ve had past students come and mentor.

“I think that’s really inspiring for a Sarah Elsworthy, Gabi Vidmar, Amy Cotton or Bella Stratford who have been out playing in America to be able to come out and talk. Seeing their successes fires the kids up I think.”

Richardson described the team, which includes a Year 8 student, was strong but diverse.

Immanuel’s opening match of the tournament against Queensland school Hillcrest Christian College will be live streamed by KommunityTV on Monday, November 28 (see full live stream schedule below).

Clashes against St Luke’s Grammar and Rowville Secondary College will follow the next day to determine finals placings.

Richardson said a semi-final appearance or beyond would be a big success for Immanuel with captain and star player Bianca Stasinowsky set to lead the way.

“When you get to national level you are playing against some amazing schools,” he said.

“The national stage is certainly a huge step up and, in my view, making the final is a huge achievement. After that lets see where we go.”

The Australian Basketball School Championships – exclusively broadcast by KommunityTV – will be played from November 28 to December 2 at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre in Carrara.

Alongside the Immanuel girls side, SA schools Trinity College and Concordia College will field side in the boys championship draw.

Teams will compete across three age groups (U15, U17 and U20) as well as the elite championship division, with games set to start at 8am (AEST) and, on some days, continuing well into the night.
