Northern Knights have swept Calder Cannons in the Coates Talent League with both boys and girls’ teams earning their first wins of the 2025 season.

Efficiency in front of goal proved the difference in the boys game, while the girls’ Knights overcame poor accuracy in a come-from-behind win.

The Knights took advantage of their opportunities at goal, kicking seven goals through the first half of footy they have largely dominated.

They led 7.3 (45) to 3.6 (24), with top-of-the-table Calder held goalless through the first quarter.

But the Cannons came firing back, and found themselves trailing by just six points when Blake Justice had a set shot with only seconds left on the clock.

Justice’s kick came off his right boot a little wide but came back and clanged into the upright, sending Cannons players to their knees as they suffered their first loss of the campaign.

Northern Knights ultimately won the boys game 12.6 (78) to 10.13 (73).
They backed up with victory in the girls clash, 7.13 (55) to 6.6 (42).

PREVIEW: CANNONS YOUNG GUN CATCHES EYE

Here’s some good news, Carlton fans.

Young gun Tyson Gresham has made a strong start to the Coates Talent League season and is tied to the Blues as a Next Generation Academy member.

The brother of Essendon forward Jade is in a similar mould, a constant threat around goals with the ability to push up the ground and create for teammates.

Part of Parade College’s back-to-back Herald Sun Shield premiership-winning teams, the 18-year-old has been named Northern Knights captain this year and is leading from the front.

And Blues fans can get a look at him when the Knights face Calder Cannons on Saturday in a Coates Talent League boys and girls double-header, livestreamed exclusively on Kommunity TV from 10.30am.

Gresham, a South Morang junior, is averaging 92 Ranking Points in the opening two rounds, impressing in the Round 1 loss to Eastern Ranges with 19 disposals, three clearances and five tackles.

Knights talent manager Nat Grindall said Gresham was the type that could produce something out of nothing.

“Tyson had a terrific pre-season and has done everything to set himself up to have a really successful year,” Grindall said.

”He’s in the Vic Metro hub and did some training with Carlton over the summer as part of the NGA and that was an awesome experience for him.

“He’s come back and gone from strength to strength.

“He’s super competitive, hates to be beaten, and he can be really crafty and do things not many players can.

“Hopefully he can continue to show those strengths and get himself into the final Vic Metro squad and continue as his season has started.”

Gresham isn’t the only Knights draft talent putting his name in lights.

Fellow Parade product and co-captain Seb Murphy has also been prolific, while Roman Moxon has been catching recruiters attention, averaging 137 points in his two outings.

Tate Hodgson and Harry Van Hattum are also in the Vic Metro training squad.

The Knights struggled last week against Oakleigh but are determined to bounce back against the high-flying Cannons at Highgate Reserve.

Calder took care of Tasmania by 74 points last week and pipped Oakleigh by five points in Round 1.

While Gresham is Carlton NGA-eligble, the Cannons have several Essendon Academy prospects, led by Adam Sweid who racked up 26 disposals, five clearances, seven tackles, six score involvements and one goal for a total of 171 ranking points.

The performance backed up a 25-disposal, five-clearance and two-goal game against the Oakleigh Chargers, which amounted to 178 ranking points..

Cannons teammate and fellow Bombers NGA member Hussien El Achkar followed a four-goal haul in Round 1 with another three majors against the Devils, while potential No.1 draft pick Cooper Duff-Tytler was impressive again with 24 disposals, five marks, four clearances and 23 hit-outs.

Grindall was confident the team would be up for the fight.

“Round 1, there wasn’t much in it and it was a real arm-wrestle - we’d played them the week before in a practice match and it was a real shootout,” she said.

“We still think we’ve got some players that have done some really good things in the first two rounds to put their names up for further opportunities.

“We’re looking forward to the challenge this week, Calder are a very good side, and the boys learnt a lot from last week and I’m sure they’ll come out as competitive as ever.”

Meanwhile in the Girls, Calder edged Western Jets by three points and the Knights went down to Oakleigh by 30.

After 38 and 31 disposals each, Chloe Baker-West and Jade McLay are two talents to watch at Calder.

Marlo Graham (29 touches, 10 tackles and a goal) and Scarlett Johnson (25 touches) both impressed for Northern in the opening round.
