The Tigers have cut short the TAE Aerospace Jets unbeaten start to the Sapphire Series season.

In a thrilling Round 6 clash, the Carina outfit held tough in the final quarter to edge the Jets 55-53 at Nissan Arena.

The Jets exploded out of the blocks in the opening quarter, but the courageous Tigers refused to give up the fight and managed to fight their way back into the lead by halftime.

Led by Maddie Ridley through the mid-court, the Tigers continued to fight and scrap for every inch over the last two quarters.

Tigers shooter Annabelle Lawrie came into her own in the crunch moments, producing two slick baseline drives before a long range bomb sealed the side’s second win of the Sapphire Series.

Elsa Sandholt continued her incredible start to the season, but her efforts on the attacking end for the Jets just weren’t quite enough to overcome their tough opposition.

In other Sapphire Series action, the Bond University Bull Sharks scored their first win of the season, while the Gold Coast Titans maintained their unbeaten start to the year to move clear of the Jets at the top of the ladder.

In the highly-anticipated Ruby Series clash, the Tigers cruised home to a 71-48 win over the Jets.

PREVIEW: Tigers set for a massive weekend on the court

It’s a big weekend for the Carina League Club Tigers as they look to make up ground in the Sapphire Series and also continue their winning momentum in the Ruby Series.

The Jets, who have lost only one game in the two leagues all season, will present formidable opposition.

You can catch every moment of the double header from the Nissan Arena LIVE on KommunityTV from 4pm on Sunday. See the full schedule below.

For the Ruby Series, in particular, there is plenty at stake.

It’s the ultimate top-of-ladder clash.

Both Jets and Tigers have suffered one loss so far this season, with the Tigers’ goal percentage keeping them narrowly in first spot.

The loser of the match up could drop to fourth if the Titans and Cougars both claim wins in their games, meaning the stakes are extra high.

It comes at a difficult time for the reigning champion Tigers, who are missing their goal shooter Tia Crombie.

The 16-year-old will likely be out for two to four weeks with an ankle injury.

The side last week brought training partner Georgia Butt into the centre court, and had Amber Yeates on the bench during round five in case of an emergency.

Ruby head coach Joeanne Hope said she is still on the hunt for a goal shooter to replace Crombie, but is confident her line-up will do their jobs and pick up the load.

“We’ve got a few ideas that we’ll be working on at training,” Hope said.

“It will be a tough game, and quite physical.

“The team that is most disciplined will come out on top.”

Captain Georgia Bloxham’s leadership and experience will be a defining factor in whether Tigers can keep their cool during the tough match.

“She’s direct, but the girls respond and react to that well,” Hope said.

“Nothing she says is different to the goals we set as a team, and her words are calming.”

Meanwhile, in the Sapphire Series, the Jets come into round six in a promising position after defeating the ACU Brisbane North Cougars in a thrilling round five clash.

The Ipswich side sit on top of the ladder on equal points with the Gold Coast Titans, who were the first to dethrone Cougars from their near three-year undefeated pedestal.

SAPPHIRE SERIES KEY MATCH-UP

Elsa Sif Sandholt (Jets) v Isabelle Shearer (Tigers)

The familiar face of 17-year-old Elsa Sif Sandholt will go up against Firebirds training partner Isabelle Shearer.

Sandholt will undoubtedly be tested against Shearer’s long arms and impressive vertical jump in the circle.

The Rockhampton local moved to Brisbane to pursue netball and moved across from QUT Netball for 2023 after the club disbanded.

Tigers’ Sapphire team may be struggling on the ladder, but the young talent of their defensive end is something to admire.

Along with Shearer, the orange and black will have the experience of Maddie Ridley, Riannah Childs and fellow Queensland U19 player Sophia Dobson.

RUBY SERIES PLAYER TO WATCH

Holly Comyns (Tigers)

If Comyns hadn’t been on your radar before, she definitely is now.

The Queensland U17 goalkeeper has been showing off her skills in the goal defence and wing defence bibs all season, but a quick trip to the shooting circle in round four was the cherry on top.

Against the Jets this week, we expect to her see her back in the goalkeeper bib where she feels right at home taking intercepts left, right and centre.

Coach Hope is impressed with the work Comyns has been putting into developing as a player.

“Holly’s a lot smarter and a lot fitter with the work she is doing,” she said.

“There will be a lot of opportunities for her in Sapphire this year, which is really exciting.”

The Year 12 student, who made her Ruby debut in 2022, and Sapphire debut earlier this year, will go head-to-head with Jets’ Kirsten-Lupe Tanielu and Amarni Apelu.
