A late curling kick from Wavell SHS five-eighth Timahna Tandy has denied Palm Beach Currumbin their fourth Langer Trophy win. Check out that, plus their Walters Cup REPLAY in full.

Cool, calm and collected as you like, Wavell SHS Year 11 sniper Timahna Tandy converted an equalising conversion on the cusp of fulltime to ensure a 12-all draw against PBC SHS.

On a cool winter’s night at Wavell, the impressive Tandy angled his kick from right to left and snuck it in.

It only just curled back enough to evade the right upright, in the process denying a willing PBC SHS, who defended excellently in the final 10 minutes, their fourth win of the season.

It was a moment of magic from the school captain, right centre Keyarn Pene, who sprung out of a tackle and put on a step to evade PBC’s last line defender and crash over to give faultless five-eighth Tandy a chance to show he had ice in his veins.

PBC had led 12-6 for 34 minutes, after moving ahead right on halftime, but cruelly Wavell cashed in on field position in the dying stages.

Indeed sensational scrambling defence from the Reds had frantically held out the Warriors on countless occasions leading up to this play.

In a crucial two-minute period approaching 10 minutes from fulltime, the Reds had a one-man disadvantage and just 11 players on the field and manned up to force an error as Wavell shifted the ball right to left.

Hooker Jack White, right wing Sunny Kama and forwards Isaac Harrison, Jac Finigan and Torino Jackson could all be seen swamping Wavell on each edge with inspired goal line defence.

Alas, the dam wall broke when Pene produced a crucial play that southern Darling Downs product Tandy, a Redcliffe Dolphins Academy ace, added the extras to.

POISED PUPPETEER

There are so many promising young playmakers in this competition.

Just look at the names of the five-eighths and halfbacks playing in this game alone:

While all four boys played out strong performances, it was Palm Beach Currumbin halfback Harrison who produced a moment of magic to give his side a telling six-point buffer on the stroke of halftime. It was the difference until Pene’s last-gasp effort in the 69th minute.

A humble half that plays within himself, Harrison steered the ship wonderfully before spotting half a hole in Wavell’s middle and attacking it with ferocity.

With a right to left step and two dummies to follow, the goalkicking sniper sliced through to score under the sticks.

Midway through the second half, Harrison showed his class with an impressive 40-20 which mounted more pressure on Wavell.

BRUTE FROM THE BEACH

Every team needs a player like Palm Beach Currumbin middle forward Roko Bilish.

It was clear neither side lacked intensity, but the way Bilish threw himself in front of opposition bodies set the tone.

Sporting bright pink headgear, Bilish fronted up on defence — where he is at his most influential.

The relentless prop did get yellow-carded for a tipping tackle but made up for lost time when he returned to the field with some more telling defence.

WALTERS CUP

Home side Wavell SHS snared a gritty 24-6 win over a gutsy Palm Beach Currumbin outfit in what was a gripping prelude to the Langer game.

15-year-old Palm Island product Billo Wotton, Wavell SHS’s strike left centre, was to the fore in the Warriors five-tries-to-one triumph.

Wotton, a prolific tryscorer who carries the ball fiercely in his left hand, scored both of Wavell’s first-half tries to help the side to a 10-6 lead at the break.

Diminutive PBC centre Kapuarangi Mokaraka had scored earlier for the visitors, but Wavell kicked into gear after that masterful Wotton double to run in three unanswered tries in the second half and win comfortably.

Fullback Boston Nau and five-eighth Jordy Hotere, who defended like a man possessed, were rewarded for their efforts with tries of their own approaching full time.

In the forwards, tough prop Dallas Davidson and dynamic No.13 Romarion Tuitama were excellent ensuring Wavell were on the front foot and playing in PBC’s half.

PBC five-eighth Ethan Alcorn was on song with his attacking kicks and second rowers Max Wood and Cohen Aitken workaholics in a positive showing by the Gold Coast side who were out-enthused by a hungry and physical Wavell side who won on the back of their thumping defence.

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS will look to step up their Langer Trophy defence by gathering additional momentum against a respected Wavell SHS on Wednesday.

PBC SHS coach Tim Maccan suddenly has his team up and about after a so-so first month of the competition.

Fresh from a 30-10 win over Marsden SHS, Maccan wants his side to continue to do the simple things very well.

“This next block of matches is about working hard on our carries and continuing to maintain our discipline and completing our sets,’’ Maccan said.

The coach said defensively PBC SHS also won 80 per cent of their tackles against Marsden last Wednesday, and that was now a standard.

“I told the players after the game that we also completed at 85 per cent and there are some NRL teams which cannot do that,” he said.

“We are heading toward the finals, we are building and we want to start hitting our peak like we did last year.’’

Wavell SHS players will stride into Wednesday’s showdown wearing NAIDOC Week jerseys designed by rising indigenous half Timahna Tandy.

Tandy, a boy from the southern Darling Downs who relocated to Wavell SHS, said he was proud to have designed the jumpers.

The quietly spoken Tandy is a lively halfback or five-eighth who was moved closer to the ruck after being a natural No.1.

But he has adapted his game well and was enjoying a bigger defensive workload.

“It’s been a big change, it’s a lot quicker,’’ he said about the rise from Walters Cup last year to Langer Trophy this season.
