Jarryd Hayne talks NFL, dating and peeing on the sidelines in Kyle and Jackie O interview

JARRYD Hayne was on fire during an interview with the popular Sydney radio hosts — and went out with a zinger.

JARRYD Hayne made an appearance on Sydney’s top-rating breakfast radio station on Tuesday morning and was his typically charming self.

But in attempting to exit an interview with Kyle and Jackie O on KIIS FM on a high, the 28-year-old accidentally struck a nerve.

“Thanks for having me,” Hayne said. “I’ve been a huge fan since I was in high school.”

“That makes us feel old. Nice work,” Kyle responded. “Nothing like stabbing me in the guts as you leave.”

The rugby league convert wasn’t lying, he was 16 when Kyle and Jackie O first commenced in January, 2005. “It’s OK mate, I love you,” Kyle added.

It was certainly a lovefest as the successful radio duo discussed a wide range of topics with the San Francisco 49ers running back.

Kyle had an interesting perspective on how Hayne has been celebrated by his countrymen since trading the blue and gold of the Parramatta Eels for the Niners’ strip.

“This is what we do, we kick the s*** out of anyone who does well in this country,” Kyle said. “Until they make it overseas — and then we call them ‘Our Jarryd’.”

Hayne said the attention — both from Australia and the US — had been overwhelming after his breakout performances last preseason.

“It was more of a distraction,” he said. “It was still fresh for me, so I was still learning. Playing that first game and making that big run, the hype just accelerated. So it was a bit distracting.

“For me (it was) ... about just staying focused about why I was over there. I wanted to go over there, learn a game, perfect it and get better and better every day. That’s still a journey. I’m nowhere near a complete player or the player I know I can be.”

Asked how close he felt he was to reaching his potential in the American game, Hayne said: “Probably three quarters ... But to come in and for the last 12 months to be able to do what I’ve done and just build off that, that’s the biggest thing for me.”

Hayne will look to continue his improvement when he leaves Australia in three weeks to return to the Bay Area. After 10 days reacclimating to America he will complete around 10 weeks of training under new coach Chip Kelly before heading home for another break before the season starts.

One key offseason focus could be to increase the role he can play on special teams. Hayne noted one of the reasons he was dropped to the practice squad last season was because his replacement, Kendall Gaskins, was a superior player on coverage units.

Of course the nature of the show also saw Kyle and Jackie O tackle the big questions like, is Hayne single?

“I’m single at the moment,” he said. “Still searching mate, still searching. A couple of the boys give me stick about it, but I’m busy chasing dreams I tell them.”

And how does he relieve himself during a game? “There’s no bathrooms on the field. So if you need to go to the bathroom they give you these little pouches and you’ve got to go to a private area. Where all the drinks are there’s a little section where no one can see you.”
