Karmichael Hunt
Free agent signing – 2011
Games: 44 (2011-14)
Karmichael Hunt’s signing and career at the Suns were bizarre.
Hunt played 44 games for the Suns before returning to rugby, but the biggest highlight came with his goal after the siren against Richmond, which won his side an unlikely match against established competition.
Daniel Gorringe
Pick No. 10 – 2010 National Draft
Games: 22 (2011-15)
After some time in the wilderness, Gorringe has become a social media sensation with some remarkable stories about his career.
During his tenure at the Suns, he had requested a trade to Port Adelaide and given the Suns a spray on the way out, before the Power set their sights on Paddy Ryder which left Gorringe unhappy.
He eventually retired on his own terms at Carlton.
Liam Patrick
Zone Selection – 2009 National Draft
Games: 13 (2011-13)
Marvellous long hair and someone who embraces long-sleeve energy, Liam Patrick was rapid.
Unfortunately, his career was also rapid as he only played 13 games in three years before departing.
Marc Lock
Zone Selection – 2009 National Draft
Games: 1 (2011)
Who was the inaugural captain of the Gold Coast Suns? Well, it was Marc Lock and not Gary Ablett.
Lock captained the Suns throughout their VFL tenure and played in their inaugural AFL game but was not seen again at the top level.
Josh Glenn
Pick No. 7 – 2015 Rookie Draft
Games: 5 (2015)
One of the strangest journeys in football in recent memory is the curious case of Josh Glenn.
Glenn had shown promise at the Suns, then felt homesick and went back to country football level, returned to Central District, then returned to the country only to be turfed after an altercation at a pub before playing at Norwood.
Yet, it didn’t stop there, as Glenn was suspended by ASADA and banned from all sport for four years.
Israel Folau
Free agent signing – 2011
Games: 13 (2012)
Following on from the rugby theme, Israel Folau joining GWS was also bizarre.
Yet, his tenure at the Giants wasn’t as flash as Hunt’s at the Suns, and he returned to rugby after a few years.
Plenty has happened since …
Dylan Buckley
Pick No. 15 – 2018 Rookie Draft
Games: 2 (2018)
Initially a Carlton father-son selection, Dylan Buckley is now more known for his ‘Dyl and Friends’ podcast.
He played just two games for the Giants after they scooped him up from the Blues, but was delisted at the end of 2019.
Curtly Hampton
Zone Selection – 2010 National Draft
Games: 51 (2012-15)
Curtly, not Curly, was great to watch at his best.
Unfortunately, we didn’t see much of him aside from his 51 games at the Giants and he eventually moved to the Adelaide Crows where he played a further nine matches.
Tomas Bugg
Underage recruit – 2010 National Draft
Games: 65 (2012-15)
Bugg played 65 games for the Giants and had plenty of scrutiny on the field for his style of play, including from former St Kilda coach Alan Richardson after an incident with Nick Riewoldt.
He was traded to Melbourne and had the quickest tenure at Carlton where he was picked up in the rookie draft before retiring.
Gerald Ugle
Zone Selection – 2010 National Draft
Games: 3 (2012-13)
One of the most unique names in AFL history, Ugle is the great nephew of a former West Coast player and the first cousin of an ex-Collingwood player.
He played three games for GWS, and one for the Indigenous All-Stars in 2013, but was delisted at the end of that season.
