Six two-year-olds guaranteed starts in Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes after Blue Diamond Preludes

Last Saturday’s Blue Diamond Preludes caused a few changes to Blue Diamond Stakes betting but six horses are now exempt from the ballot for Victoria’s richest two-year-old race.

Six horses are now exempt in the ballot for the $2m Blue Diamond Stakes after Saturday’s Blue Diamond Preludes at Caulfield.

The Blue Diamond Preludes impacted betting on the February 22 event with colts and geldings winner Field Of Play rocketing to the top of Blue Diamond markets at $5.

However, Field Of Play is not among the Blue Diamond nominations with the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young stable likely to pay a $55,000 late entry fee to run the gelding in Victoria’s richest two-year-old race.

Fillies Prelude winner Palm Angel became the second favourite in Blue Diamond betting at $6 after her win over My Gladiola, who is now an $8 chance.

The first three placegetters in each Prelude became exempt from the Blue Diamond Stakes betting with Devil Night and Katsumi Orochi earning starts in the rich race with their encouraging debut efforts in the colts and geldings race.

Consistent filly Wiltshire Square also confirmed her place in the Blue Diamond field with her honest effort behind Palm Angel and My Gladiola.

Wiltshire Square and Devil Night moved to $18 in Blue Diamond markets after their respective Prelude performances.

The Ciaron Maher-trained Cherish Me bypassed the Blue Diamond Preludes but earned her Blue Diamond ballot exemption with her win in last month’s Geelong Diamond.

Cherish Me is an $11 chance to score at Group 1 level at only her second start.

Exciting Sydney colt Wodeton is an $8 chance in Blue Diamond betting but is equal 19th in line for a start in the Caulfield feature.

Wodeton’s trainer Chris Waller has nominated the son of Wootton Bassett for Saturday’s Pierro Plate at Randwick, which would make a Blue Diamond start most unlikely if he took his place.

Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner O’ Ole is also an $11 chance to win the Blue Diamond and is guaranteed a start in the race after her Gold Coast triumph.

The Blue Diamond Stakes field will be declared on February 18.
