Matt Dunn plays waiting game with luckless Torque To Be Sure for Magic Millions

It was a hard luck story for Matt Dunn and Torque To Be Sure in The Debut at the Gold Coast on Friday night and the trainer wants to go straight into the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on January 11 if he can.

Matt Dunn will wait as long as possible to see if his luckless colt Torque To Be Sure will gain a Magic Millions start after running second in The Debut at the Gold Coast on Friday night.

It was a case of what could have been for Dunn after Torque To Be Sure was badly checked twice in running in the $250,000 feature under lights, before charging home to narrowly be denied by Vein Girl.

The $45,000 cheque for second place puts Dunn’s colt on the cusp of getting a start in the 16-horse field, however there are still several two-year-old races to come prior to January 11 which could see other horses catapulted into contention.

“I would really like to go straight into the Millions with him, we will have to see what is dropping out and what isn’t,” Dunn said.

“We got $45,000 for running second on Friday night, there is the option to run him the week before (in the Gold Nugget) if we feel like we need to.”

The $260,000 purchase was a standout in the parade ring on Friday night, however was unable to reel in Chris and Corey Munce’s Vein Girl.

Maher masterstroke has third Magic Millions within reach

History says Torque To Be Sure will need to have another start prior to the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) to be a chance of winning, however Dunn said he is more than willing to go in off just one start.

“We think he is a really nice horse, you look at him and he is a magnificent type,” Dunn said.

“He didn’t really surprise us with the result, we knew he could gallop, but it did surprise as to how well he responded to what went wrong in the race, the horse inside him crashed into him twice.

“He recovered well, gathered himself up and still put in like he did.

“I dare say we will be running on the Saturday before the Millions, if we can get him inside then we will probably keep him at home.”

Torque To Be Sure is rated a $34 chance with bookmakers for the Magic Millions after his run in The Debut, while race winner Vein Girl is $15.
