HOT TIPS: WEEKEND BEST BETS
DARYL TIMMS (Herald Sun)
Flemington
BANKER: CHAUTAUQUA (Race 7, No. 1)
Be brave and let the moths out of your wallet and remember the old punting theory that you always back a champion. OK, he’s only $2.50 but also remember your multiple tables from punting school that $2.50 x $100 = $250. Got the picture.
IN THE FRAME: AZURITE (Race 4, No. 5)
Faces a big task to roll the favourite, Pemberley. But was caught wide last time in the race won by Pemberley, but drops five kilos and looms as the big improver who should at least run a place.
RISK: SUPIDO (Race 9, No. 12)
You could be called Stupido for putting the slows on Supido, especially when the stallion will start shorter than Jean Shrimpton’s skirt at the 1965 Derby. Expect some blues singing when Yesterday’s Songs salutes.
TRAINER: DARREN WEIR
D (Don’t) K (Kiss) Weir has had some big days out at recent meetings, and he should be able to claim a couple of wins here. But the riches look like be shared around.
JOCKEY: JAMES MCDONALD
Sydney visitor McDonald has quality rides but faces opposition from Dwayne Dunn and Damien Oliver.
SHAYNE O’CASS (Sportsman/Daily Telegraph)
Rosehill
BANKER: ASTERN (Race 4, No. 2)
Is $1.65 to win the Silver Slipper which is getting short enough now if it wasn’t already but you can’t mistake class when it’s staring you in the face. Look out Capitalist — Astern’s coming for you!
IN THE FRAME: TELEPATHIC (Race 5, No. 4)
Faces the daunting task of having to beat stablemate Catkins AND First Seal on the same day but she’s capable. She’s got the residual fitness, a lovely trial and most importantly, blinkers on first time. Been some money for her too on the TAB Fixed Odds since they went up.
RISK: CATKINS (Race 5, No. 2) and FIRST SEAL (Race 5, No. 1).
One of them is already a loser, not sure which one, but I reckon they might both go under.
TRAINER: It’s a WALLER-a-thon on Saturday (again).
JOCKEY: BOWMAN versus AVDULLA; take you pick.

BEN SCADDEN (The Advertiser)
Morphettville
BANKER: CALIANCO (Race 3, No. 1)
She’s a good-quality mare who’s raced well at three runs from a spell. She’s down significantly in class and gets the chance to bounce back into the winner’s list here.
IN THE FRAME: HIOCTDANE (Race 5, No. 1)
Gave a hint he’s on the way back to his best with a solid third behind stablemate Kushadasi last time. There’s not a lot of apparent speed in this race, so expect him to get a softish lead and take a ton of catching.
RISK: THE NEW BOY (Race 8, No. 1)
Honest gelding from the Danny O’Brien barn having his first run at Morphettville. He’s certainly consistent but doesn’t win out of turn — and the Parks circuit can catch plenty of horses out. Prefer to look on at the tight odds.
TRAINER: RICHARD JOLLY
He’s one of SA’s in-form trainers, with at least one winner at the past five Morphettville meetings. He looks set to play a strong hand again with five runners — Hazy Lane (race 2), Loqueteux, Bay Road (race 4), Hioctdane (race 5) and Kushadasi (race 7) — all among the winning hopes.
JOCKEY: JOSH CARTWRIGHT
This apprentice is really making his mark in Adelaide and can again play a leading hand at Morphettville on Saturday. Each of his four rides are among the main fancies and it’d be no surprise to see him land multiple winners.
