SATURDAY MEETINGS (AEDT Times)
RANDWICK (10 races, start 12.10pm), MORNINGTON (10 races, start 12pm),
DOOMBEN (8 races, start 1.28pm), MORPHETTVILLE (8 races, start 1.08pm),
ASCOT (8 races, start 3.54pm).
HOT TIPS: WEEKEND BEST BETS
SHAYNE O’CASS (Sportsman)
RANDWICK
THE BANKER: TARZINO (Race 7, No. 1)
He is the best 3YO stayer of his generation by panels, he’s won a VRC Derby (easily) and he walked away with Rosehill Guineas last start. I know racing is a funny game and horses are flesh and blood, but seriously, this looks over the line. So much so, he’s a better bet at $2 than Winx is at the $1.85 in the Doncaster. Time will tell.
IN THE FRAME: QUEEN OF WANDS (Race 2, No. 8)
Is a tough little filly with a big heart and a bigger finish. She has been really impressive in her last starts, winning them both and thoroughly deserves her shot at the Carbine on Saturday. She has got black-type experience having finished fourth in a Listed race at Flemington on Cup day.
THE RISK: EL DIVINO (Race 1, No. 3)
Speaking of Winx, this is her little brother. He’s from the hype stable (Gai Waterhouse @ More Joyous Lodge) and they’re talking him up as they always do there, but I’m not buying him. he won the world’s weakest maiden at Gosford and now he’s going to beat Astern? No thanks.
TRAINER: CHRIS WALLER
You know, the guy who trains Winx (Race 9, No. 3) and, oh, Libran (Race 3, No. 1) — another certainty.
JOCKEY: JAMES McDONALD
Astern (Race 1, No. 1), Telperion (Race 6, No. 1), Exosphere (Race 8, No. 14), two slam dunks there.
DANNY RUSSELL (Herald Sun)
MORNINGTON
THE BANKER: TOM MELBOURNE (Race 9, No. 4)
Win this race and you win a golden ticket into the Caulfield Cup. Tom Melbourne can just about lock his spring plans in now. Should have won Albury Cup by 12 lengths but reportedly suffered lockjaw and almost threw Glen Boss over the running rail. With Boss in Sydney, Ben Melham picks up the ride.
IN THE FRAME: GOLD FIELDS (Race 7, No. 7)
Scooted away like he was leading the pack in a MotoGP at Sandown last start. Unless it was an optical illusion, and the time suggests not, a repeat wins here.
MEFNOODA (Race 2, No. 6)
Classy Mick Price mare resuming. Rose to Group 3 level in her first campaign, running sixth behind Solicit in the Summoned Stakes. Jump outs point to a forward first-up run.
THE RISK: HONOURABLE TYCOON (Race 4, No. 9)
Placed five times and won once at past six starts. Consistent for sure, but stats suggest he might be a little nervous about poking his beak out on the line.
JOCKEY: DYLAN DUNN
The apprentice is not quite in his dad Dwayne’s class just yet, but he’s on the right trajectory. Will put his 2kg claim to good use on fancies A Lotta Love (Race 2, No. 3), Velox (Race 5, No. 2), Prussian Vixen (Race 6, No. 4) and longshot Squeaky Squirrel (Race 10, No. 4).
TRAINER: THE FREEDMANS
Lee and Anthony Freedman don’t have a lot of runners, but sure make them count. Tom Melbourne can book them a Caulfield Cup start, while Sebeauty (Race 3, No. 9) is a worthy long shot.
NATHAN EXELBY (The Courier-Mail)
DOOMBEN
THE BANKER: LADY JETSETTER (Race 1, No. 4)
Should continue to firm after generous odds were served up on Wednesday. She gets the gun run from this draw and her efforts from two and three starts back are good enough to win here.
IN THE FRAME: CRACK ME UP (Race 2, No. 10)
Big watch on Crack Me Up, who was very safe in the market on debut before flopping behind Nikitas, probably Qld’s best two-year-old. Astute 2yo stable elect to kick off in town again. Clearly shows a bit at home and early odds are tempting.
THE RISK: HONEY TOAST (Race 7, No. 6)
Is warming up for the Toowoomba Cup in a couple of weeks. Has drawn wide and is coming back in distance, albeit off a little freshen up. Would think he will be giving them a big start, rather than risking having a gut-buster and putting at risk his Cup chances in a fortnight.
TRAINER: DARYL HANSEN
Hansen is striking at better than 20 per cent in recent weeks. Urban Knight (Race 5, No. 3) went like a rocket at the Gold Coast last time, running his rivals into the ground with blinkers on. If he runs to that level again, his rivals will struggle to gun him down around Doomben.
JOCKEY: DAMIAN BROWNE
Had a rare off day two weeks back, getting stuck in traffic on a couple of well backed runners. Has since been to Dubai for World Cup night success and arrives home with another gun Brisbane book. Five mounts is a busy day by Browne’s standards, so don’t expect him to go home empty-handed.
BEN SCADDEN (The Advertiser)
MORPHETTVILLE
THE BANKER: ROYAL RUMBLE (Race 7, No. 3)
Classy three-year-old racing in peak form. Impressive effort in Listed company last time and the drop back in distance won’t worry him. Should be too good.
IN THE FRAME: MULLINGER LANE (Race 6, No. 1)
Did a stack of work when first-up a couple of weeks ago. Drawn much better here and proven in the past that he can carry weight. Should be in the firing line for a long way on the Parks circuit.
RISK: SEGREGATION (Race 8, No. 5)
Been racing in terrific form but has found one too good for him at past two outings. He could end up awkwardly placed from middle draw and tough to make ground with 59.5kg on his back.
TRAINER: HAYES-DABERNIG
The David Hayes-Tom Dabernig camp has certainly made its mark in Adelaide in recent weeks. They’ve got six runners across five races at Morphettville on Saturday and expect them to figure prominently again.
JOCKEY: DOM TOURNEUR
Has seven rides at Morphettville on Saturday, including four for top trainer Phillip Stokes. Among his best rides are Smart Manouevre (Race 1, No. 9), Typhoon Witness (Race 4, No. 7), Eclair Attack (Race 5, No. 4) and Segregation (Race 8, No. 5).
