HOT TIPS: WEEKEND BEST BETS
SHAYNE O’CASS (Sportsman)
ROSEHILL
THE BANKER: MOGADOR (Race 9, No. 10)
Was fair to moderate at Caulfield on February 27 beaten 2.9-lengths by Santa Ana Lane et al. Don’t forget he was fifth in the G1 Coolmore and a VERY unlucky neck second in the Blue Sapphire before that at Caulfield behind Keen Array. Loved his trial at Warwick Farm the other day even though he wasn’t asked to do much against far, far inferior horses. Gets the good run from barrier eight of 15 for J-Mac and just wins if he’s at his best
IN THE FRAME: DANCE OF HEROES (Race 7, No. 7)
Is quite a good horse when fresh being 5s 2-0-1. He is 10s 1-2-3 at home and 1s 1w at the distance. He was sixth of eight in his trial, beaten a very long way but the winner won by a huge space. Dance Of Heroes was doing his best work over the last 300m.
THE RISK: SORT AFTER (Race 6, No. 10)
Seems rather skinny, wafer thin in fact, at the $2.80 to win a pretty reasonable looking race.
THE TRAINER: CHRIS WALLER
He’s not a bad trainer at any venue but he absolutely owns Rosehill. Look at his cast on Saturday — they are amazing!
THE JOCKEY: HUGH BOWMAN
Where Waller goes, Bowman follows.
DANNY RUSSELL (Herald Sun)
CAULFIELD
THE BANKER: GREY STREET (Race 2, No. 6)
Looks the winner purely on formlines, having split Petits Filous and Jalan Jalan at her last start. Trainer John McArdle rates her a stakes grade galloper.
IN THE FRAME: MEFNOODA (Race 5, No. 9)
A lightly raced mare who made Group 3 level in her first campaign and looks to be on the rise, dead-heating in her first run back. Drawn well, and the Mick Price-Craig Newitt combination have to be respected on their home track.
THE RISK: REAL LOVE (Race 9, No. 1)
The class horse of the race, but is dropping back from the 3200m of Adelaide Cup to 2000m off a six-week break. Headed north for the Brisbane carnival, so treat this as a tune up. Looking on.
THE TRAINER: JOHN McARDLE
McArdle has not featured heavily on the main stage lately but has two great chances at Caulfield — Grey Street in a BM 78 and Beau Rada in the Bel Esprit Stakes.
THE JOCKEYS: BEN THOMPSON and BEN ALLEN
Take your pick of the two Bens — Thompson and Allen. Both claim 3kg and will feature in more than one finish. Thompson’s best rides are Deja Blue (Race 6, No. 4) and Stoker (Race 7, No. 4), while Allen has three serious chances — Pilly’s Wish (Race 2, No. 1), Tonopah (Race 4, No. 1) and Lyuba (Race 6, No. 1).
NATHAN EXELBY (The Courier-Mail)
SUNSHINE COAST
THE BANKER: BIG TREE (Race 8, No. 2)
This is a good field with lots of depth and Big Tree has a habit of finding one better through his career to date, but he does look a good place gamble at the $2.50 available in places. He’s placed seven of nine in his career and many of those have come under big weights from wide gates. This time he meets rivals on level terms and draws favourably. Cannot see him running badly.
IN THE FRAME: BLUE DESERT MOON (Race 8, No. 12)
Is unbeaten and faces key rivals who she has dethroned in the past. Meets them slightly worse at the weights this time, but she’s been dynamic in her wins and the Tony Sears stable is on a high after last week’s Weetwood.
THE RISK: ELEGANT COMPOSURE (Race 2, No. 4)
Unbeaten mare who overcame a scare before the start to make it 5/5 last time. This looks a tougher race and she gets to 57kg quickly, plus draws worse than Oradonna, who ran so well behind her last time. There’s others, like Deconstructed, who have form in better races than this.
THE TRAINER: MATT DUNN
Dunn is on fire at the moment and at one point on Wednesday, he was striking at a remarkable 50 per cent for the month. He has a good team in, headed by Redoute’s Choice filly Kebede (Race 5, No. 5). “Obviously she needs to find a couple of lengths to match the Sydney fillies, but I’m quite certain she’s going to be much better this week than she was last time,” he said.
THE JOCKEY: JEFF LLOYD
Takes the ride on Bjorn Baker’s unraced two-year-old Winning Rupert (Race 3, No. 10). His trial form looks good and think he will be hard to beat. Lloyd has the key to the enigmatic Architect (Race 7, No. 5) and can see that horse being the big improver in the Ascot Handicap. He failed to fire fresh, but never got into the race. Expecting him to do better for Lloyd here. The South African veteran also has key rides on Promas (Race 2 No. 10), Lady Jetsetter (Race 4, No. 2), Mystic Opal (Race 5, No. 11) and Wicked Intent (Race 8, No. 1).
