Horse racing: Call to address race day ‘imbalance’ in Far North

Cairns Jockey Club general manager John Cameron says there’s an “imbalance” between the number of TAB and non-TAB race days in the Far North region.
Racing Queensland released its thoroughbred race dates for the 2020-21 season yesterday.
Cairns will host 18 meetings, all TAB, while Innisfail, Atherton, Mareeba and Gordonvale turf clubs will host one TAB meeting and 23 non-TAB meetings between them.

“When you add them up, this region has the worst ratio of non-TAB race days to TAB race days,” Cameron said.
“It doesn’t happen in any other region to the extent that it does up here.

“If we have more TAB race days, more prize money goes back out to the jockeys, trainers and owners and it keeps the region sustainable, which is what we need.”
Cameron said he believed there should be at least one TAB race day held in the region every fortnight.

“Clearly, it has been working very well with recent race dates, with Townsville and ourselves racing every alternate Thursday.”
