An emerging English international, a towering Australian fast bowler and one of Queensland’s most exciting teenage prospects are among those chosen in this The Southport School First XI team of the decade.
Sam Hain, Billy Stanlake and Hugo Burdon are part of more than 100 years of cricketing tradition at the Gold Coast-based GPS school. And they would spearhead a TSS team from the last decade.

TSS has a wonderful cricket history.
Consider Test cricketer Scott Muller, a tower of strength for Queensland during the Bulls’ all-conquering march through the 1990s, walked the hallways of TSS.
Most recently Stanlake, Michael Neser and Alister McDermott have shone, while New Zealand international Blair Tickner is another to come through the school’s cricket program.
Then you have state players like Gilbert Gunthorpe, Lou Cooper, John Buchanan, Steve Monty, Bruce Oxenford, Alister McDermott, Nic Stevens, Cameron Brimblecombe, Xavier Bartlett and Mathew Kuhnemann.
Throw in spinning all-rounder Callum Taylor from the South Brisbane club and you have a cocktail of cricketing talent.
REVEALED: The greatest GPS batsman ever
Buchanan is, of course, Queensland’s first ever Sheffield Shield winning coach and the most successful coach of an Australian Test team.
He was also such a good all-rounder, that twice he was named Premier grade Player of the Year while playing for University.
Oxenford, a leg-spinner, is a current Test umpire while Alister McDermott was a Sheffield Shield grand final fast bowling hero.
Monty was a good opening batsman for Queensland and Lou Cooper was revered by his peers as a Queensland gloveman
They are the past.
But I’ve come up with a mighty side which highlights the quality of TSS cricket in the most recent past.
How’s this for a TSS team of the decade?
1 Robbie Benadie (captain and wicket keeper)
2 Max Houlahan
3 Nick Stevens
4 Sam Hain
5 Hugo Burdon
6 Sol Budinger (vice-captain)
7 Dylan Riley
8 Matt Kuhnemann
9 Josh Kann
10 Blair Tickner
11 Billy Stanlake
12th man Callum Taylor
GPS CRICKET COVERAGE: The GPS cricket season continues on Saturday and Andrew Dawson will be covering matches and reporting for both the Quest Community Newspapers and The Courier-Mail online sites.
