GPS First XI football: Key players from an exciting round 2

GPS First XI football: Who were the round 2 Players of the Week? The list includes a sporting all-rounder from BBC, a trio of TSS weapons and a promising Churchie centre back.

An inspirational BBC sporting all-rounder headlines our round two GPS First XI Players of the Week story following another gripping round that saw Nudgee, Churchie and IGS prevail.

BBC Year 11 student Darcy Satharasinge very nearly celebrated his 16th birthday as a four goal hero on Saturday when BSHS and BBC drew 4-all at Fursden Road.

Right-footed striker Satharasinge, an Alice Springs boy who also played First XI cricket last term, finished with a hattrick and almost had four when his teammate Tighe Butt-McGuire whipped in a brilliant cross on the cusp of time.

An exhausted Satharasinge, who had worked his socks off scoring three goals for the visitors, did not get that one to go but was easily BBC’s best on ground in his side’s whirlwind entrance into the 2024 season.

Last term Satharasinghe was a classy middle order batsmen who had a quality season under coach John Buchanan.

This term, playing under coach Jamie Morgan, the young Mr Versatile has put away the batting gloves, thrown on his shin pads and attacked the winter with a First XI stunning debut.

Which other players shone across round two? Find out below.

GPS FOOTBALL ROUND TWO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

James Greenup (TSS)

James Greenup had a brilliant defensive display and as a reward he scored a goal from a set piece at the start of the second half.

In the second stanza, TSS played brilliantly to storm back into the contest.

Achille Monet (TSS)

Following Greenup’s lead was Monet, an excellent defender who limited Nudgee’s chances at goal.

Cooper Ulrick (TSS)

Ulrick worked himself to a standstill alongside Hunter Douglas to push for TSS’s attack and attempt to draw level at 2-all.

With Ulrick, Douglas, Monet and Greenup leading the way for TSS, an upset was looming.

Jackson O’Reilly (Nudgee)

Jackson O’Reilly was immense in the backline, dealing well with the aerial threat of TSS and finding the right combination between control and aggression throughout the game.

Lewis McGrorey (Nudgee)

Lewis McGrorey has been somewhat of a bolt from the blue over the last three seasons, rising to be one of Nudgee’s most trusted.

His engine and work rate is second to none and his technical skill is constantly improving. This was on display when he brought down a high ball with his first touch and danced past two TSS defenders last weekend, highlighting his long term improvement.

His calmness on the ball and drive to win was key in a tight contest which TSS should be proud of.

Declan Warnes (Nudgee)

Warnes, for the second week in a row, was one of Nudgee’s best on ground.

Warnes has come out firing this year, starting the season on another level and quickly becoming a leader in the playing group.

His vision and bravery in possession was there for all to see last weekend as Nudgee continued their fine start to its season.

Lucas Herrington (Churchie)

Emerging centre back Herrington continued to enhance his reputation with a strong showing against a spirited Terrace outfit that did well despite missing several key players to injuries and suspension.

Herrington was enormous for the home side, his mere presence keeping Churchie in the box seat for much of the contest.

Speedy winger Isaac Caruana and calm and collected Churchie captain Luke O’Sulivan scored the goals on the day.

On the defensive end, Vaitusi stood tall and ensured Churchie’s strike weapons were kept quiet.

He was massive defensively, while left back Dom Catalano deserves praise for his strong performance.

Johnny Zervos (Brisbane State High)

Brisbane State High’s captain must have said something at half time because his side turned a 1-3 halftime deficit into a 4-all draw.

He stepped up himself with a goal to equalise the scores at 4 apiece but ultimately it was his leadership to inspire his team back into the contest earned him a spot in this company.

Matt Won, Charlie Kim and Elias Ali Sheme (Brisbane State High)

The attacking prowess of these three was everything as BSHS climbed a mountain in the second half to share the spoils.

All three proved deadly in the second stanza, impressing a vocal home crowd.

Ashton Marsh (Ipswich Grammar)

Marsh was Ipswich’s prime mover in their home win, scoring two goals, one of which a terrific header to the far post.

His other was a striker’s finish from a cross which highlighted his class.

He worked tirelessly, holding the ball up well and getting his teammates involved.

Nelson Deng (Ipswich Grammar)

A natural Leader, Deng put in 110 per cent effort across the game, won all of his challenges and was a sight to see in the air.

Tighe Butt-McGuire (BBC)

Not far behind hardworking birthday boy Satharasinghe was Gladstone boy Butt-McGuire.

Despite coming off the bench, Butt-McGuire was locked in, energetic and raring to make a late game impact.

He did just that with an accurate cross close to full time and he was a ball of energy, working tirelessly to deliver a go-ahead goal for the visitors.
