With the booming GPS First VI volleyball season up-and-running, we look at key Players to Watch and team lists from the respective sides.

The Greater Public Schools’ First VI volleyball season is up and running, with the popularity of the sport continuing to expand year on year.

In season 2021, who will be some of the key GPS Players to Watch?

ST JOSEPH’S NUDGEE COLLEGE

JOSHUA REID

A boarder who joined Nudgee in 2020, Reid has represented Australia in a number of junior teams and camps. A starting pass hit, this is his second year in the First VI

WILLIAM ROOSTAN (captain)

In his third season in the First VI, Roostan arrived at Nudgee three years ago having represented Victoria junior teams and having attended multiple Australia camps. He is a starting opposite

ETHAN PETCOS

Petcos is a Brisbane boy whose vertical leap is so impressive, he is the national champion high jumper. A starting middle, this is his third year in the First VI.

Archer Springer: Nudgee’s youngest ever starting player, he started at Libero in Round 1. Springer has represented a number of Queensland teams in both beach and indoor volleyball.

BEN DAVIES

The seasoned Davies brings great experience to the squad, having been a member of the Firsts VI for three years, including helping BBC to the 2019 GPS premiership.

HARRY McLAUGHLIN-PHILLIPS

McLaughlin-Phillips has the winner touch, having been a member of the historic First XV premiership side in 2020. An on court leader, he is in his second season with the First.

SETA-JOVIC-PEU

The multitalented Seta-Jovic-Peu is a state level volleyballer who is in his second season.

ANGLICAN CHURCH GRAMMAR SCHOOL

CALEB SALA

Churchie’s captain of volleyball Caleb Sala knows what it takes to win a GPS premiership. After a shared premiership in 2020, the Churchie Firsts of 2021 are aiming high, looking to secure an outright win this season. However, a premiership is not the only goal for the captain. “I am looking for ways to build camaraderie among the players, both within teams and across the whole community,’’ said the veteran of three seasons in the Firsts.

“While it will be difficult this year as we play without spectators, finding ways for the older boys to connect and support our younger teams and demonstrate sportsmanship will be a key focus,’’ he said.

Caleb’s representative achievements include selection in both Queensland and Australian teams, although two international tours scheduled for 2020 were postponed. Sala is known for his strong serve and as a leader on the court.

TOOWOOMBA GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Volleyball at Toowoomba Grammar School has grown greatly over the past 10 years, with nearly 240 boys playing the sport in Term 1. In recent years, athletes from TGS have been selected to represent Queensland and Australia which is a testament to the level of commitment of players and coaches to achieve at a high standard.

The First VI team has several representative players and is captained by BEN HOOD who represented Australia against Japan in 2020 before the restrictions of COVID-19 came into place.

THE SQUAD includes: Ben Hood (captain), Andrew Byrnes, Thomas Cocks, Ollie Jillett, Angus Scott, Jack Oster, Ruben Geldenhuys, Sam Noble, James Darlington, Hussein Yusaf, Ned Beasley, Charlie Horn.

ST JOSEPH’S GREGORY TERRACE

THE SQUAD: Shaun Anderson (C), Ben Chatwood, Jacob Clifton, Josiah Harrison-Leaunoa, Louis Hunter, Jake Laherty, Nick Lawrence, Joa McMahon, Matt Mitchell, Tom Sheehan (v-capt), Riley Tillotson.

BRISBANE GRAMMAR SCHOOL

The successful BGS program will be spearheaded by returning 2020 players Lucas Sherington, Michael Bekker, Liam Scheel, Ali Rahmanian, Alexander Tong and Sebastian Pherous – all members of 2020 First VI team. Coached by Rhys Cox, BGS have an imposing record in the last 13 seasons, having won 72 from of 82 games, including seven premierships

THE SQUAD: Michael Bekker, Jed Green, Daniel Harris, Liam McGregor, Kai Mizuno, Sebastian Pherous, Ali Rahmanian, Liam Scheel (Vice-Captain), Lucas Sherington, Jasper Thynne, Alexander Tong, (captain), Beckett Weiss.

BRISBANE STATE HIGH SCHOOL

BSHS captain ISAAC KIM has been with the program since Year 7 and has developed as a player to be an integral part of the development and improvement of BSHS in the GPS competition. He is also an accomplished musician playing clarinet in the BSHS Symphonic Band and also plays Basketball for BSHS. He is described by his coach as “level headed, professional who leads by example and is well respected by his peers’’.

Outstanding young sportsman ISRAEL LEOTA will be one of the Players to Watch in the IGS side to be captained by Oscar Schulz. Leota is a natural athlete who can play multiple football codes while also excelling in athletics. But his vertical leap also makes him an excellent volleyball talent who has represented the Queensland under 15s
