A “few beers” with the fashion mogul behind his LIV golf clothing was the catalyst for the bizarre Masters fashion statement that Cam Smith says earnt “lots of love” online.
Smith, who opened his Augusta campaign with a one-under 71, aided by a long birdie putt on the 18th hole, wore a blue blazer while hitting on the range and then during Wednesday’s practice session.
It sent golf watchers into a spin, with clips of Smith going viral a year after fellow Aussie Jason Day wore such a bold opening day outfit that he had to have his clothes checked by Masters officials this week.
Happy with his opening round and reacting to the response of his blazer-wearing, Smith said he made a deal with the man who supplied his Ripper GC clothing and had to stick to it.
“Funny story, I think … I met Charlie, the Grayson guy, at teams week this week, and we had a couple of beers and maybe even a couple too many beers, and we got to talking about fashion,” he said.
“He said it would be great if you wore a blazer at the Masters. I think it’s the place to do it, and I agreed to it. I’m a man of my word, so I did it.
“It was actually good, though. I mean, for how a sport coat or a blazer should feel, that one I was able to swing in pretty easy. It was a bit chilly, so it kind of worked out. It was good.”
While there was plenty of curiosity around his clothing choice, Smith said the overall reaction was positive.
“Lots of love really,” he said.
“It was pretty good. I wouldn’t say I’m a fashion guru by any standard, but I felt good in it.”
Smith, who has five top-10 finishes at Augusta, finished the opening day six shots behind leader Justin Rose.
